OT Howard...Can anyone explain this?

Howard is a dumbass. Terry can't leave his man. Howard should be stopping the ball on that play. Personally, I don't think he wanted that matchup.
 
The funny thing is that it really looks like Howard is telling him where to go to get the basket. But in reality i think he is actually trying to get the defense set correct. Not sure how many fouls he was playing with? I also can't see what led to the break in the first place.

Actually, Terry should have taken the ball. you ALWAYS take the ball and force a play/pass. Plus Harden was coming up from behind and could have slid to Terry's man. Howard is slow yes, but he isn't going to keep up with a PG in the best of his days. He did the right thing in my opinion, trying to call out the defensive set and needing help, he just didn't get it....

God I hated typing this post... cant stand defending DH, but trying to call it like I see it.

Orlando Dwight would've blocked the shot easy. He was very quick and covered all areas of the court. If Robin Lopez does what Dwight is doing here we say he's a heady defender with dumb teammates. When you're a center as quick as Robin Lopez the Allstar days are long gone.
 
Ha, looks like Howard wanted to stay back to defend the 3pt line!
 
Howard is just not engaged, he's lethargic..watched him walk behind Gasol and watch him make a layup without any effort in that game..the guy is milking it on defense
 
Howard looked like Brandon Roy did at the end. I think he might be a pretty tough guy playing on a gimpy knee. Sure he is a dumbass but still.
 
Who is number 5 in that play? He's the worst offender IMO. He just totally lets his man not just seal him off from the play, while he passively and helplessly watches, but he weakly lets his man get inside position in the key, right in front of the rim, with no resistance whatsoever. I mean No 5 was literally in the key, in between the ball handler and the basket, and in front of his man, and he just walks the other direction and stands behind his man and watches the guy waltz to the basket. And he left his own man so open the guard could have just as easily handed him the ball for the jam. Plus, if No 5 had picked up the guard, No 1 was right there to pick up 5s man. I mean No 5 is down right Hardenesque in that play.

Terry should have absolutely stopped the ball handler from waltzing in for an uncontested layup, even if it meant leaving his man. For one thing Harden was out of the play but he was in perfect position to pick up Terry's man. Trust your teammates. For another, never stand and watch while an opponent strolls in for an uncontested layup. Rule 1: Stop the ball. But Terry wouldn't have had to leave his man if No 5 had gotten in between his own man and the basket and maintained the position he already had between the basket and the ball handler. Probably that's what Terry thought No 5 was going to do, so he rightfully stayed on the three point shooter. Certainly Dwight thought so too.

Dwight looked like he didn't have the wheels to catch up to the guard and make the play, and he had two defenders behind him who could have (although really Terry was probably too far away, and was covering the three point shooter). There is plenty of blame for that defensive lapse but I don't see how anyone can blame Dwight for not stopping the guard on that play. The caption is unfair, IMO.

I wish those clowns had played like that against us last week.

I checked the play-by-play for when the score was 41-39. With 4:19 left in the 2nd quarter, Harden had 2 fouls, Howard and Terry 1.

Howard has acted retarded since before he was drafted, and may be on meds like Metta World Peace, whose career went into quicksand slowness when he went onto meds. But Harden is no quicker.

Certainly looked like he was trotting back to me.

Reminds me of some play that Wesley did to him in some playoff game...

Had Terry left his man that would've been a wide open 3. Howard Had the best position to stop the ball. Terry would've been out of position.

Somebody had to do something or he was going to waltz on in there and score just like he did. He ran by 4 guys that simply let it happen. Howard was willing to point at where he felt someone else should have been. Harden simply didn't want to put out any more effort. Terry was completely unwilling to adjust and
Smith got pushed out of the way.

It's as if Howard is pointing to the ballhandler the best path to get to the bucket.

Did you not see Harden trailing the play that could have easily covered the three. D, your a ref. You should know you Always check ball, I learned that in JR high :). You never cover the three and let the PG have an open lane to the rim. Thats BB101.

I agree Howard should have slowed down the ball handler way up near half court. He didn't, and then obviously couldn't keep up once the guard got past him. He saw he had team mates in position to stop the ball, and pointed it out. Even if Howard had managed to get in front of the guard way up there, the guard would have smoked him with very little effort, and the end result would have been the same.

I agree Terry had a long way to go to get in front of the guard, and would have had to leave his man. But someone has to stop the ball, and Harden was in position to go over and cover the three point shooter. Whether Harden would have done so is open for speculation. ;) Plus, Terry most surely expected Smith to stay home in the key and stop the ball handler, or at least make him make a decision, so Terry 'rightfully' stayed on the shooter. In today's NBA, you really can't leave those guys open in that situation.

IMO it all falls on Smith (see my tl/dr post ;) ). I disagree slightly with KJ: Smith didn't get "pushed" out of the way. He volunteered. He had perfect position, but chose to go the other direction, around his man, putting himself on the wrong side of his man and the wrong side of the play, and not only leaving his man a clear one step to an open basket, but a clear path for the guard to get to the rim unimpeded.

Just a horrible basketball play by Smith.

I get what your saying about the bulk of this, but Terry still should have went after ball. He was in the best position to D up at that point.

I was ALWAYS taught ALL through school that when playing D on the fast break, the closest defender to the ball ALWAYS takes ball and forces the ball handler into a decision. Its always better to get beat with a good pass and open shot than an uncontested layup.
 
At any rate, there were three fails on one play, with Harden lollygagging up the court behind it all. LOL
