Earlier tonight, a crowd of Blazer fans lined up outside the Oregon Humane Society on Northeast Columbia Boulevard to see two of their team's starters.

At about 7 p.m., they got what they came for and got to meet the basketball stars. They also saw a lot of pets with familiar names. The humane society and the Portland Trail Blazers partnered to make adopting twenty of the shelter's animals a little more enticing by throwing in a bag of goodies with each pet.

Center Joel Pryzbilla and guard Steve Blake, together with broadcasters Mike Barrett and Rebecca Haarlow, presented the animals that had been re-christened after the teams' players. Adopters of any of these animals receive a package containing a pair of tickets to a game next season, and other Blazers merchandise.

Each of the players had been asked what kind of animal his namesake should be. Predictably, many chose to be represented by dogs. A half-dozen cats were in the mix, too, most notably one named after Channing Frye, a dog fan who blogs about his bulldogs.........................

EDIT: I guess I should have read the last paragraph prior to naming the thread. ;)

The big exception in the cat and dog crowd? A fluffy rabbit named Jerryd Bayless. The guard had requested the long-eared pet to be named after him, to the chuckles of his teammates, remembered Haarlow, who came up with the idea for the event.

"I had dogs all my life," Haarlow said. "Now that the community is loving the Blazers again, it's great to bring that love and the love for animals together."

They still don't know how to spell Przybilla?

They were talking about it at the game. I have to say, great idea, but for me it hurts a bit since my cat Brandon died a week ago. I also have a cat named Rudy, but he is named for Rudolf Nureyev, not Rudy Fernandez.

Hell your cat Rudy might have been on the planet longer than Rudy Fernandez has even existed!

No, Rudy is only 3 1/2. But he adopted me before I had heard of Rudy Fernandez.

I wonder if they have a cat named choke-in-overtime.

You all realize my dogs name is Rudy Fernandez! When Mr. Oden heard this and saw this pic, he couldn't stop laughing and making fun of me! If I named him Greg Oden would it have been so funny?

Here are my 3. Margot is on upper left in tree. Rudy is bottom left, looking startled. Orlando, head cat, is on right.

I would be a little concern that someone would care more about the tickets and meeting a couple Blazers than they would about the pet. Hopefully they all go to good homes.

I'm surprised there were no birds listed. You would have probably picked up another cockatiel.

I believe the Bayless/Rabbit thing is playing off the fact Oden calls him Turtle in practice.

Way tooooo cute HCP! What breed/mix and how old? My boy, Rusty, is in my avatar. But now he sports a Widmer Drop Top collar since that dog resembles him.

I trip off how people treat their pets in the US . . . they are like children.

The idea of pets takes on a whole different concept in other countries I have visited . . . and I frequently get into discussions about Americans and their pets. I find it fascinating.

I hear Qyntel Woods has a follow-up idea to this event.

Ya, a lot of people feel their pet is part of their family. My wife feels our birds are her babies.

But a lot of people also abuse their pets. When you get a pet you have a responsibility to treat them properly. I'm sure some countries don't care, but I'm glad we are not one of them.

I remember seeing a doc about dogs and they showed a country that ate dogs. While that would horrify many in the USA I could understand it after all some countries wouldn't eat beef, but what I found was odd is one person that butchered dogs had a dog for a pet too. He'd hit a dog over the head with a club right in front of his pet dog. I wondered then if times got tough,,,,.

I had a three legged dog and when people commented on him only having 3 legs I would tell them 'I love that dog I'm not going to eat him all at once!'.

I grew up with a cat that had 3 legs and a kick-stand!
