through quick glance, I didn't see it, but would be interested to see a breakdown of previous years. Democrats with a republican president, instead of just these last 3. Seems like every 4 years, we have one side saying the other is halting progress, and then it shifts.

Most presidents in recent times accomplish little domestically in their 2nd terms. They tend to focus on foreign policy, since it's something they can legitimately do with little or no help from congress.

Pelosi/Reid set the tone with their "my way or the highway" approach early on. Then they found they had to pay off their own party members to get enough votes. They even used a questionable parliamentary trick to circumvent the constitution to pass ObamaCare.

They got to set the agenda and wasted Obama's political capital on that mess, the most massive spending Bill in history by far, and stuff like carbon credits.

Nero fiddled while Rome burned.

Technically, the republican house has passed plenty of bills that the obstructionist senate refused to consider. There was no willingness to give one side a bill they wanted for a bill the other side wanted.

This wasn't new, tho. For most of W's presidency, the republican house passed lots of bills that never got considered by the republican senate. That senate wasn't filibuster proof tho.

To add, the Senate could have passed their version and then let a conference committee make changes for a full vote from each House to keep everything moving forward. But when the dems in the Senate refused to even consider the bills, they truly obstructed. But, as you say, one side does it, then the other, then the other.... Where will it end? I think when we get a President who can unite the country. Obama is the great divider, so forget him. Mitt is Mitt, so forget him. I hope sometime we get someone like Regan who can pull sides together.

We need currents of history to unify us. Lucky Roosevelt. He had a financial crisis, a war, and a big communist country competing with our economy.

But not early on. His first administration was a near disaster. The economy still sucked and he vetoed an anti lynching law.

You think he should have done it in a day? Even Clinton took his first term before balancing the budget after the debt debacle he inherited.

No, silly, I'm saying that had the war... not come along he probably wouldn't have accomplished what was with the economy. I think Truman did a much better job with the post war economy that FDR did pre war.

That's the point of my post. We already have a war and 3 of the 4 conditions of that era.

The only difference now is that then, the rich were worried about the country, i.e. their fortunes, being lost. Now they are so confident that they aren't destroying themselves, they play hardball to lower the lowest taxes since WW2.
