Just got a new computer, and lo and behold, it has this newfangled operating system called Vista that is a piece of crap. It's slower than Windows XP, which I used to have, and it lacks many of the easy functions I'm used to.

Things that used to take one step now take two . . .

Things that used to be in one place are now in another . . .

Most of the time I feel like I've taken a step backwards . . .

Aaarrggghhhh!!

Anybody else feell the same way?

One thing I can't do in Vista is send a live link to a website in an email. I had some HP guy in India on the phone with me for an hour, and he couldn't figure it out, either. Anybody know how to do this with Vista?

Your help is much appreciated!!
 
Yes! I have a lot of problems with Vista as well. Mostly compatibility ones. It reminds me of Windows ME- that OS wouldn't run with anything either.
 
Sorry to hear about your tough luck, Shooter. Our IT department refuses to support Vista, so we're still on XP.

What email client are you using? Outlook? Or something else?

Not sure that I can tell you (I use XP at home still) but that's important info.

I'm looking forward to Windows 7. Everything I've read about it sounds great. Supposedly faster and lower processor requirements than Vista AND xp, which would be a first for a Windows operating system to actually get more efficient than the previous.

Vista isn't great, but people have short memories. Anyone unfortunate to remember Windows ME knows that Vista is far from the hellish nightmare of operating systems that it could be. Vista is like driving a Civic after being used to an Accord. ME was hurtling down a steep hill inside a garbage can half-filled with used diapers and fermented ketchup while listening to the Macarena.
 
This guy claims to be running Windows 7 on a Pentium 2 with 266MHz CPU, 96MB RAM & 4Mb graphic card.

I've never seen a 1.0 on a Windows Experience Index. lol. It's impressive he could even get it to run.
 
I run Windows 7 Beta - the license is actually good until next year. I would say that about 95% of the apps I did run (on XP) work fine on Windows 7. And once you turn off Aero (the transparency) it performs quite nicely. I tried Vista for a little while and was incredibly disappointed and frustrated. With Windows 7, as well as running Linux in a VMWare instance, I can safely say that my XP days are behind me.
 
As an aside, has anyone heard about Google's new operating system? Supposedly, based upon their research, most people just use their home pc's for surfing the internet, e-mail, pictures, etc.

The operating system is supposed to be super-streamlined/quick to meet these needs.

Its going to be linux based, a shell which launches the chrome browser....basically syncs with google docs I believe, applications, etc...mostly the browser is going to be the central part of it.
 
As a software developer, I hate the idea of Google coming up with their own operating system. I don't support Mac as it is (we're just too small time). A lot of little independent software developers like me can make a living developing for one OS, but not for two or three. There's just too much work and not enough money in it.

I suppose you can argue I should just develop for the browser. But go take a look at Google Documents--they've got billions of dollars, and their online word processor is less sophisticated than Word was in 1995. How am I supposed to develop a cool web-based app for my market when Google can barely do it?

I hate Microsoft. But there's a reason why their monopoly on the operating system makes sense. It's the same reason Beta never replaced VHS. A single type of video player made it much easier for different movie companies to distribute movies. A single standard operating system makes it easier for software developers to create and support software.

Ideally Google comes up with an operating system that supports all Windows applications. I'd love that. But I don't really think it's possible.

It's called Microsoft Outlook, or Outlook Today. It's definitely different from Outlook Express. I loved Outlook Express, but now this latest program is a piece of crap. I hate it.
 
The CC I work in are still using XP. Vista has to be one of the most flawed OS' to date.

What hardware did your system come with? What version of Vista? I bought a new desktop system a few months ago and it came with Vista 64bit, Quad Core and 8 gigs of ram. I love it!! Way fast! And I have it loaded with the latest big apps, Adobe CS4, Dragon 10.1 , etc.

I bought a laptop a year ago with a Turion 64 and 2megs of ram w/ Vista Home and it SUCKED!!! Runs better with the Windows 7 RC.

Ram is really cheap. MAX IT OUT!!! You'll be a lot happier. Also buy a video card if your system has a built into the motherboard one currently. It's sharing ram with the rest of your computer.
 
Never understood any of the negative buzz about Vista. I've used it for a few years and haven't had a single problem. It's actually been a way better OS for me than XP was.

me either. i've heard over and over how terrible it is, but i haven't really had any problems with it.
 
I have no idea what you guys are talking about, when you send a link in an email, don't you just copy and paste it in? If you email program isn't sending emails, that is a whole different issue than not being able to send a link.

Can you send any email to anybody else?


Vista is not rocket science people. Some stuff is in different places, and some alarms are annoying, but you can turn them off. I have been able to run every program I used to (which is a lot) and do everything needed.

Lastly, the biggest mistake people make when getting a Vista box is buying a box which is hardware spec'd right. Vista runs sweetest with over 2GB of RAM. If you are trying to run with less than that, you have no chance for success. Also if you are trying to run Aero interface when you don't have a system that is good enough for it, it will bog. So turn it off.
 
I've had no problems with Vista. Of course, I'm not super-picky when it comes to operating systems. I like Mac OS X best, but since Windows became stable (around Windows 2000 or so), I really don't care whether I use Mac OS or Windows.

Yes, that's how I do it, but the link is never "live" after I paste it in. In other words, the link doesn't turn blue so someone else can just click on it and go to the site. It's just the URL address, which the recipient of your email then has to paste into the address bar and hit "enter" to see.

I frankly don't know if it's Vista causing this problem, or the email program you get with it. As I said, I just bought a new computer, and the operating system and email program are both different from what I was using, which was Windows XP and Outlook Express.

I'm impressed as well, not that I want to run Windows 7, or any other version of Windows, on a Pentium 2, or any other computer, but that is still impressive.
