Now, WHY is it the All-Star Game has never been played in Portland?? Is it truly due to lack of luxury hotels???

...location, commerce, accomodations, etc, etc [as cool of a city as Portland is, it doesn't have the "draw" that other cities have]

What about sheer deservedness, though. I'd say, if the city is big enough to have an NBA team, they're certainly big enough to host an A-S game.....if only just once.

agreed. I have always wanted to go to an All-Star game. The Rose Garden is awesome, and I think someone who said they have been to a lot of the arenas, that it is better than a lot of others.

"Memphis, Portland, Sacramento, Oklahoma City, and Toronto are the only current NBA cities that have not yet hosted an NBA All-Star Game."

Out of those I see Toronto getting a bid before us

...don't get me wrong, I think it was would a great day in PDX if it happened [and yes, the city is more than deserving] but I just think there is not enough appeal. Especially with other major cities being so far away and all [then again, how did Seattle do while hosting the AS Game?!]

Clearly, there needs to be a redistribution of wealth.

Seattle has held one, so I think your thoughts on major cities being too far away is invalid.

As someone much smarter than me said, "a princess liner tied about 500 yards from the RG should work very nicely."

All star weekends are overrated. When it was in LA, I went to the rookiegame/dunk contest/etc and the only reason I was able to go is one of my friends' boss' didn't want to go so blammo, free tix. Most of the tickets are swooped up by scalpers and corporations, even shitty tix are like 200 bucks. Even if it were in Portland, the chances of most of you actually going to the game is slim to none.

...that might work [maybe they can schedule Barnum & Bailey at the Memorial Coliseum for the same AS weekend as well...maybe even a car expo at The Convention Center...anything else???]!!!

...I believe that Seattle, by itself, is much larger than PDX?!

There have been All-Star games in Cleveland, Atlanta, Miami, Orlando, Oakland which are all smaller population wise than Portland

Seriously, the city would go nutso. Plus, with the Sonics now gone, there would be a strong pull from our neighbors to the north.

...and that is where my proximity to other major metro area comes into play [think in terms of diriving distance...2 hours maximium] is my point still "invalid" to you?!?!?!

p.s. GO BEAVS!!!

Seattle, as a city, has 30K more people than Portland, as a city, does.

It's Seattle's metro that is more populous than Portland (and their metro encompasses a larger area too).

I wouldn't be surprised if Oklahoma gets an ASG before Portland does. You know, to reward them for the cup of tea they've had while being in the NBA.

...get on the ball then, start up a "Bring the NBA AS Game to PDX" organization [kind of like the push for MLB]!!!

I would, but that might be kind of difficult for me to pull off, as I live in Atlanta. WAIT! I did pull off the KP gig, though.

Hmmm...... :pimp:

Yeah, population wise Seattle and Denver are only 30k more than us and just as far away from most major cities.

We are even closer to LA (a major city) than Seattle.

I think Portland not getting an all-star game has more to do with the hotel arrangements than anything.

but that's just my opinion

It's because of the hotels.

If and when the Convention Center builds their Hotel Tower we wont be seeing the ASG in Portland.

...again, I am talking about the bulk of the major metro populous in and around the areas of discussion [remember, I said within a 2 hour drive, not flight!!!]

There are more than enough hotels in PDX and the surrounding cities to host a measily little AS Game...are they "quality" hotel arrangements though [and are there located near the city center]?! That is more likely to the debate when considering accomodations in PDX for the AS Game...

thats what I'm saying, when people like Kanye West and 50 Cent come to town, they are going to want crazy nice hotels (as well as the players). I don't think they have enough quality hotels for these rich people.

...on a side note;

NBA sets 2010 All-Star Game at new Cowboys stadium

DALLAS (AP)—NBA Commissioner David Stern says the Dallas Cowboys new stadium in Arlington will host the 2010 NBA All-Star Game.

Stern announced the plans Thursday in a ceremony outside the American Airlines Center near downtown Dallas, where the Dallas Mavericks play. Mavs owner Mark Cuban and Cowboys owner Jerry Jones also attended the ceremony.

The game will be played at the stadium on Sunday, Feb. 14, 2010. The all-rookie game and Saturday night festivities will take place the day before at the American Airlines Center.

This will be the first time that the league’s All-Star competitions have been split between two venues since 1989, when the game was played at the Astrodome and other events went on at the Summit.

Dallas last hosted the NBA All-Star Game in 1986, at Reunion Arena.

Forget the ASG. They need to hold the draft in Portland again. I was there in 92 and it was a hoot.
