Rollerball (1975)
iu

Plot: it is the future (2018 I think) and corporations run the world. Everybody loves the super-violent game of Rollerball, whose aging star (James Caan, excellent) Jonathan E is a threat to the corporation ethos that no individual can rise above the group. So they make the game steadily more and more violent in the hopes of getting him killed. The sport actually makes sense, so much so that the cast played it in between filming and various entrepreneurs offered the director wads of cash to franchise it. He refused, because the whole fucking message of the movie was that it was fucked up.

I think I saw that as part of a double bill with Chariots of Fire in the early 80s.

This is game three of a five game series. Crowds have been locked out of the games because of COVID-19. I really enjoy watching Jae’Sean Tate play.
Bryce Cotton has been a beast in the playoffs this year. Huge game from him tonight too, Perth would have been done without him!

Whiplash isn't a sports movie in that it's about drumming, but damned if it's not a great sports movie. It's about a teacher (coach) who pushes the boundaries to try to get perfection out of his student (athlete), preparation for big events (games) and what happens when you take it too far.
