I suspended Mediocre Man for 3 days.

I don't agree. I think context matters. If you call Zags a fa88ot I'm going to edit or delete the post. If you call Kingspeed a fa88ot I'll be inclined to suspend that person. I don't think it was just by random that MM used the word whore to her. He could have used asshole or douche or... but he used whore. A word that I don't recall him ever using to insult other members. He specifically used that word to provoke a reaction out of her.

The rules are the rules. Personal insults are against the rules. It doesn't say that some personal insults are worse than others. I think that's what MM has been harping on (day in and day out) that there is a double standard on this forum in how we enforce the rules. As tedious as he has been, I think you proved him right.

Moderating this forum is challenging, and different mods handle situations differently - at their discretion. I personally find calling a woman a whore much more offensive than calling a man (or a woman) an asshole.

Tying this whole thing together, two years ago, a regular poster who was known to deliberately antagonize others, called my then 12-year old daughter a whore because she had a crush on Nicolas Batum and wanted to marry him. The post was edited and the poster warned, but in spite of my protestations, he was not banned or even suspended. That attack crossed multiple lines. As I said, I find the word whore especially offensive. The attack was not provoked in any way, it was not directed at me, but at a member of my family who does not post on this board. It is the most offended I have ever been by anything posted in this forum and I almost left the forum because of it.

Just pointing out there is no black and white when it comes to moderating. Every situation is different and every mod different. MM will be back soon, hating on Meyers Leonar_ and being his usual contrary self. He won't even miss any games. Hopefully he'll learn his lesson and come up with less offensive terms for insulting those who disagree with him.

I think the question was already asked, but what is an actual insult for a heterosexual white man that you would put on the same level as calling a woman a whore?

Are straight white guys completely unprotected from abuse? Are we supposed to just take whatever abuse people throw at us?

You're doing a good job Sly. I appreciate your approach and willingness to discuss your thought process.

I appreciate it.

I don't think MM will learn any lesson from this other than he was right. I'm not saying he was right, but he believes there is a double standard and banning him will reinforce those beliefs.

My daughters were both repeatedly mocked because of an autoimmune disorder they have, most of all by a mod on this board. When I complained about it, the owner of this site said that I deserved it, and that moderator still has an avatar that is a passive-aggressive shot at me, as well as my daughters.

If that's the atmosphere of playing favorites, then posters shouldn't be shocked when posters act in a similar manner. In other words, as I see it, Sly is trying to improve the culture of this board, and really there are very few lingering feuds left on this board that spill over into threads.

The rules are the rules, but there are different levels of offenses. If this were a workplace, Sly's logic would absolutely be appropriate. I can see the validity here too.

Also, given this forum's history of misogyny, it probably wouldn't be a bad idea to crack down on it a tad.

But is there an insult that a man can say to another man that would offend you on the same level as calling a woman a whore?

I can't think of an equivalent. I can only think of way weaker and way worse.

Weaker.....dick jerk loser asshole etc......

Worse......rapist pedophile Nazi..???????

If one isn't a rapist pedophile Nazi I don't even think they would be offended. Cracker and the like mean nothing to any white man.

Exactly. Apparently we're bulletproof.

I edit or delete all personal insults that I see. I don't play favorites. I've even edited some of your posts previously. I have edited Mag's posts on here and he is probably my closest friend in this forum. Again, I don't play favorites. I thought what MM posted especially egregious. Calling a man a kunt is going to get a different reaction than calling a woman a kunt. IMO whore is similar in that provokes a different reaction when you use it to insult a man or a woman.

I edit BF's insults when I see them. I've edited Crandc's insults when I've seen them. Don't forget what finally caused PDXKass to meltdown and leave was because I edited one of her posts. So I think I have clearly shown that I don't play favorites. There is a process we as mods use where we talk to the person via PM about the insults, explain what is not acceptable and then proceed from there if that behavior continues or escalates. I'm more at the beginning of this process with BF. I've already been through all of this with MM. BF was not suspended because her actions did not warrant suspension yet.

So there isn't an insult that I can use against you that would draw the same reaction as MM calling her a whore?

But is there an insult that a man can say to another man that would offend you on the same level as calling a woman a whore?

Laker fan.

Honestly, it depends. Is the insult ethnicity based? Related to sexual orientation?

Basically, anything the EEOC would frown on probably deserves to be handled differently.

I honestly can't think of one, but then I've never been easily insulted. I'm a big guy and can take care of myself. It may be chauvinistic of me, and a bit old fashioned, but I am very protective of the women in my life. I always have been. I also think any man who bullies, abuses or intimidates women (or children) is an absolute coward. Again, chauvinistic perhaps, because it implies that women can't protect themselves, but I've seen plenty of examples in real life and the guy usually outweighs the woman by 50 - 100 lbs.

No. That's the point. Is there an insult that you can use to offend a straight white guy on the same level as calling a woman a whore?

Why does this matter? Sly has gone above and beyond to make this a productive conversation about his modding decisions. Trying to turn this into a deconstruction of "acceptable" insults will go nowhere. Degrees of offense are culturally bound. The only reason you're asking that question over and over is because you think you already know the answer. However, there is no correct answer. It will be different for different people.

Whether or not you think that there is a clear cultural answer to that question, we have to enforce the rules here and I don't think there should be a different set of rules for one person over another. If you personally attack someone, your post will be edited. If you're a repeat offender, you will be suspended.

If Sly felt that MM had broken the rules enough to warrant a suspension, that's his decision and I support him, but I think we need to be more clear on what constitutes a regular, run-of-the-mill personal attack, or one that goes way over the line.

I think the mods should require proof that people who give out that much personal info on the board are actually who they say they are. I am not gonna say which female poster I am talking about but one of them past or present is just super hot to me and I for one demand proof that she is/was the real thing.

This will make me happy and the mods will know how to moderate those insults because they know if the person is real. My idea of proof is this...nudes with a Blazer banner and my name written on them with a marker. These can be pm'd to the mods and I will scientifically examine them for further proof.

We will send you some of Sly's nudes so that you can prove he is in fact a man... that resembles a dog.

For science.

No, there isn't. Because our life experience is not and will never be on the same level as a woman, a black man, or a homosexual. Context is key to responding properly to any situation. Ignoring these fundamental differences essentially strips the humanity from our response. We have the ability to reason and discern; context-based nuanced response is evidence of that ability.

From what I've seen, intent is the extra factor that goes into Sly's modding decisions. People insult Mags constantly for being rich, Asian, having a hot wife, etc. These insults contain vulgarities and racially insensitive words. But it's obvious to most that all parties are in on it and it's in good fun. MM called BF a whore to shut her down.

Intent is obviously a difficult thing to weigh over internet communication. I think Sly does a good job at judging the intent of the many, many insults hurled on this board. His transparency after the fact makes these kinds of conversations possible.

I don't think moderating this forum will ever be black and white nor do I think it should be. If you boil it all down to a set of hard and fast rules you could just program a bot to moderate the forum.

I think we as mods should take insults and problems on a case by case basis and use our best judgement as to what is the appropriate action to take. Using some kind of check list moderation policy wouldn't work.

Will that change if we keep acting that way? What if we start to act like everyone is really equal? Will straight white men pretend that it's true and when we get together still call women whores and people ******s and ***gots?

See, I didn't even mean to add the world people as if women AREN'T people. I'm just programmed wrong dammit!!!!!
