I just went to Best Buy and spent a good while comparing many televisions. Upon talking to the sales guy, I'm now wondering if my best bet might be to go with a plasma....considering I don't game and usually just watch sports, tv shows, and movies.

That said, I liked this one:

The plasma refresh rate is 600hz and this particular model is 1080p.

I bought a plasma. If I had to buy a TV today, it'd be LED or Plasma. The LED is really expensive, but they'll come down in price. In fact, I own a 58" Viera. I love the picture. The black frame kind of disappears in a dark room, which adds to the experience. The built in speakers suck, but I don't care since I use a sound system.

Check out the reviews on cnet. They have a "best picture" set of rankings and you can go from best to less best and find one in your price range.

I figure you are going to spend $1K+ and not going to want to throw the TV away in a couple of years to get something new. If the picture is great for 5-10 years, you can always upgrade the sound system, get DirecTV or whatever, to improve your experience.

You are going to love it.

Picture is going to be awesome.

But picture is half the experience. With a good sound system and blu ray, it's better than going out to the movies, IMO.

Yep, I got last years 1080p Panasonic at costco for 1199 and with a PS3 playing bluray it is freaking awesome. Not too long after I got it I saw a preview for The International with Clive Owen on a bluray I was watching and went to the theater and saw the same preview.

The theater had one thing over my 50 inch tv, size and that is all.

I have an older Harmon Kardon stereo without HDMI inputs but it still sounds awesome, need to upgrade though.

I did go to Best Buy to verify some things. Didn't buy anything there, though. All of these purchases were made on-line. (following a fair amount of research on each.)

Good idea regarding the new couch! :clap:

I talked to a friend this morning...........who had just returned from Taiwan.....and they told him that Plasma is entirely going away..........soon.

He then told me that (they said) I had made a HUGE mistake in buying this plasma television, as opposed to lcd.

I don't care. I'm still "good" with this purchase. I'm just going to make sure I break it in correctly. I downloaded that calibration file from the website you recommended. BTW, thanks for that!

No problem, just don't let the screen freeze on anything.

I can tell the LCD tvs and the plasmas apart from 30 feet away. Some people don't see the blockiness of an LCD and some people see tons of phosphor trails in the plasmas. I like the plasmas better and read AVS forum top to bottom before I bought one.

All the new HD tvs are badass, if I were a hardcore gamer I would buy an LCD no doubt.
 
Congrats on your new monitor ABM! Sounds nice. I am about to get a new LCD in the next few days. Samsung or Sony though. We'll see.

You did good.

FWIW, I never "tweaked" the colors on my set and it looks awesome still after 2 years. People who come over and see it always comment on how great the picture looks.

You will be amazed by how great sports look on it. Except when the Blazers lose.
 
Do they have an Obama program for getting LCD's? Like the cash for clunkers thing? I've got like four old TV's out in the shed......................I wonder if I could get a new LCD for those and not need any cash?:dunno:

I'm a plasma guy. They're not as sharp as LCD's but they're much richer and vibrant with natural tones.

And I see you took my advice and checked at the AVS forums. Nice. Be sure to run your break in and follow the settings that the hardcore people give for their TVs. You can tweak it to your preference from there.

You are gonna LOVE watching HD sports on that baby. Great time of year too. I'm not a big fan of baseball or hockey, but I love watching it on my plasma. :ygrin:

ABM, that is EXACTLY the TV I was looking at getting for the basement of our Denver house. My wife has banished me there for all the Blazer games, so I'm getting it sometime in the next few weeks. Let me know what you think of it.
 
The funny thing about the plasma versus lcd thing is that people pick the lcd in the stores because they are brighter. We have our plasma turned way down, but we keep the room pretty dark most of the time.

Ain't it the truth. I find myself watching things like golf just because the picture is so beautiful and the grass is so vibrantly green . . .
