I would go 5/35 on Stastny

It sounds like Colorado is a little reluctant with O'Reilly and McKinnon to pay him, so if he wants to come to a contender for the prime of his career this is a prime spot. Even though he's not a great #1 he's very good and then if you maybe could deal Stepan/DMc and another prospect for Kesler that would be a solid 123.

Problem is that there's a team out there who will offer 6 or maybe 7 years at that hit if they're desperate enough, and that's just terrifying after our recent luck with FAs. No more mulligans for Glen.

However, with the 3 big C's now potentially available thru trade, the Stasny bidding might not get as bad as I thought it would.

Right, and Colorado is getting better quickly so if it's close he may stay there as well. You figure he'll be good into his mid 30's so maybe going 6/7 isn't a bad idea. Thornton should be good through the end of his contract but I'd rather they deal for Kesler if possible.

What concerns me about Statsny is the last 3 years his point totals are basically Brad Richards

Concerns me. Maybe the Rangers don't feel like they have the money to add a big C like Stastny, Kesler, or Thornton (who still claims he wants to stay in SJ period).

Hard to see us winning a cup with Stepan and Brassard as our only real legit C's.

5/35 i would take any time, but as Prod said, the problem is he'll likely go 6 or 7yrs. Pass on that, even if he's only 28.

Don't see anyway with cap rangers will be in on stastny. Rather see colorado overpay for him and have to move oreilly who they seem to be involved in acrimonious arbitration case with. In that case maybe slats swoops in, pulls his trade magic which is his best forte anyway and we get our young adam graves like center.

I don't see any way they deal O'Reilly. If anything they would let Stastny walk at a crazy high price rather than dealing O'Reilly. Sakic said as much regarding O'Reilly earlier this week.

Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: Avs Paul Stastny wanted to “see what’s out there” and Joe Sakic is fine with that. The Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports there is significant interest in Stastny. “It’s his right. I respect that,” Sakic said.
If the Avs lose Stastny to free agency, they could fill that hole with Nathan MacKinnon or Ryan O’Reilly, which would then open up a hole at wing. The Avs currently have 17 players under contract at around $46 million. (June 26)

It sounds like the Avs are prepared to lose Stasny, move O'Reilly back to C and then sign a winger. That's probably what I would do if I was Sakic too.

For sure Prod. I would let Stastny walk as well. He is good, but not great. At the numbers he will get, let him walk. They have a lot of talent upfront anyway. They would be dumb to re-sign him for all that money.
