I'm not normally a fan of retiring numbers unless the player is a hall of fame caliber guy, but in the case of Jerome I would make an exception.

He did a lot of great things on the court for this team, and he was a major contributor on a team that should have won a championship, but he also contributed to the team consistently for over ten years well into his retirement. The guy was a blazer till death. He bled portland. He was a true son of this city and I think he deserves to be enshrined in the rose garden (not moda).

Without question. I forgot who said it (Schonz I think) But it could be argued that he is Mr. Trail Blazer.

Didn't we have this discussion several years ago? Would love to have dug that up.

No question in my mind that his number should be in the rafters.

Totally agreed. Dude was a big part of one of the best teams/runs we've had. Beyond that, he's done so much for the organization, the community, the fans. To see the devastation his loss has caused the organization, the community, the fans... It's clear that Mercy meant so much to all Portlanders. So many non-Blazers and fans are also choked up over this loss.

Do what's right, Blazers. Please retire his number.

He's been loyal. No matter what the organization might have did to him. Trade him...demote him...release him. In contrast, how do you think or how did Clyde respond to similar treatment?...Mercy stayed loyal to this team and town to the end. He loved them both. You add that to what he did on the court. I agree his # should be retired which was my point yesterday. Arguably the most popular Blazer of all time.

I don't care how many numbers are up there. #25 belongs in the rafters.

I do think #25 should be up there and I do think 1 or 2 of the others up there should come down. Not that I ever think that would really happen.

Nobody embodies the organization, the franchise, the team, the fans, the spirit of it all.... Better than Kersey. He endeared himself to us, embraced us, and we did the same. Some say he came back, but he never left. It was a marriage that took some left turns, but it was a marriage that was sealed years ago and neither side ever could walk away.

Damn, I'm actually pretty tore up about this.

I think we need to alter our retired numbers. We need to go to a "Ring of Honor" format and un-retire amost every single number, save for #32 and #22. I know it's an unpopular sentiment, but so many numbers have been retired that it makes the honor meaningless.

I'm all for that, unlikely as it is, but 25 should be retired.

Previously I had thought Kersey shouldn't have his number retired simply because he wasn't quite above the threshold of that level of player. I don't want 40 numbers retired and the team is heading in that direction.

But Kersey had spent years as a Blazer ambassador and such a visible member of the community that counts for something beyond his court contributions. The way he tragically was taken from us far to young makes his loss far more painful than any players final games with the team. I think he will have his number retired. His death is so sad and sudden while he was still involved.

We had talked before of having a ring of honor for the players that don't quite fit the criteria of having a jersey retired but need recognition. If they want to do something different besides retiring his number the team could create "Kersey's ring of honor" with him as the founding member.

Think of it like this:

Would you ever want to see another player wear #25?

I wouldn't.

Without a question, retire it. Steve Blake pretty much set the tone for that by changing his number from 25 to 5. No other Trail Blazer should ever wear No. 25 ever again.

The New York, fucking Yankees and their 27 championships, only have 16 numbers retired. Portland already has 11. You can't hand them out like PEZ dispensers for crying out loud. We have won a grand total of 1 championship. Kersey had a career PER of 14.9. probably a little higher with the Blazers, but still an average player.

Welcome back, MM.

He was more than a player to this organization, and deserves his banner up there more than some others.

New York has how many franchises?

The Yankees
The Mets
The Knicks
The Nets
The Giants
The Jets
The Rangers
The Islanders

What's the population of New York city? 8.4 million? I highly doubt that any player in the history of any of those sports franchises could impact the community the way that Jerome Kersey impacted the city of Portland.

LOL I knew that if this forum got sentimental enough, MM would finally get so pissed off he starts posting again even if he only has the use of his nose to type.

Also unsurprising: MM starts posting, Leonard has a bad game.

Also: This is not fucking New York. I don't give two shits about New York. If Portland ever became as heartless as New York, I'd leave.

I kind of agree with you. But what's done is been done. You can't go back and undue what you have put up and decided on a while back. And because a trend has been started, there is absolutely no reason to keep #25 out of the rafters. Especially if you think about what he has done for the team, community.

Retire the number. And soon....Maybe even tomorrow night. While all this is still fresh.
