... if he occasionally got a 'T' for yelling at a ref or if he made comments in the post-game that got him a fine. I'm so tired of his defeatist "it won't do any good" mentality. Bullshit it won't do any good. The refs are human. If you light into them once in a while they'll have to start paying closer attention to their calls and non-calls. Popovich does it. Jackson does it. Sloan does it.

Not to mention it would have a side effect of letting his players know that he will go to bat for them if he feels they are getting jobbed.

Didn't he get a T 2 games ago?

I really did not see what good a T would have been yesterday after the dumb call on Rudy at the end of the game.

Yeah, not at the end of the game. Get one earlier to send a message.

Occasionally this tactic can be whipped out as a way of rallying the troops so to speak, but on the whole ranting at the refs and getting Tee'd up mostly brands you as an asshat, and a whiner. I'm not opposed to Nate getting in the grill of the officials, but there is a fine line.

I can remember a number of times in the past where he's done that. It's certainly not a frequent occurance, but it has happened. I'd be interested in seeing some stats on Technical fouls on coachs. Doesn't seem to be tracked normally at ESPN or 82games.

I agree, at some point you have to go to bat for your guys. If Roy gets knocked down I expect someone to knock down a player on the other team. Same goes for Nate if he sees his team is getting raked on the calls he needs to take a stand for his players. That foul on Rudy happened right in front of Nate it shouldn't have been Rudy who got that T, Nate should have stepped in for his player.

I just did a five minute google search and poked around a few sites that came up but didn't find a definitive source for technical fouls called on coaches. It'd be interesting to see who the leaders were, as I'd imagine most of the leaders would come from teams that are deemed to get respect from the officials.

Maybe the collective wisdom and resources of the board will find a good list of technical foul leaders among head coaches?

I'd be more interested in seeing the stats from the full 2006-07 and 2007-08 season. Not enough games so far this year to create much of a pattern.

The game came down to a few points. Do you really think Nate wants to give the Warriors more free throws when they made 33/35 last night? He is a smart coach. There is a reason he is coaching an NBA team and you're writing on a message board. :ghoti:

Because he played in the NBA? That's really the only reason he is a coach right now. The good news is at least Soda doesn't have a career losing record on the message boards.

You can easily make the argument that had Nate recieved a technical the Warriors might not have had that many FT attempts also

You're saying nate getting a T might have motivated the team to stop fouling and to get back on defense... I understand what getting a T can do to change a game, but when you have 21 turnovers, allow 22 fast break points and foul the team enough to shoot 35 free throws... A T is not going to magically make all that turn around.

I blame this loss on Shavlik Randolph. I think his tie was crooked, obviously ruining the teams chi and balance.

Sticking up for your team can motivate. Will it cure all, hell no but at least the guys know Nate will have their back. I get tired of seeing him shrug shit off, even after his star players are getting mugged. Sometimes it takes a fight (not meaning actual fight) to get someone to give you respect. There's a reason the refs show a certain amount of respect for the Sloans, Pops, and Jacksons of the NBA. I've seen Sloan literally walk on the floor and chew a refs ass without getting a T.

BTW you can't say we didn't lose that game because of the ref. Rudy would have gotten that ball and tied the game. I'm not saying it's all the refs fault but that one bad call made a difference in the game.

Think bigger picture here folks. I'm not just talking about last night's game. I see this as a pattern with Nate, that he's all too accepting of "that's just the way it is" when the officials job the Blazers.

You might be right. However I could also see it having the opposite effect. Perhaps the tech leaders tend to be tuned out by Referee's and thus their complaints don't help them at all. I honestly don't know which it is. It'd also probably depend on the exact referees as well, so may be tougher to track down. Anyways, interesting line of thought.

Maybe at the start of the game, but it would have been very silly for Nate to purposely get a Tech. to "send a message" in the closing seconds of a game.

And I have a lot of respect for Nate. I think he is doing a very good job.

I'm reminded of the SAS game at home, where the Spurs were called for a couple fouls in the first few minutes. Gregg Popovich got up, walked over to the sideline ref and proceeded to spend the next 5 minutes in his ear. The Blazers had fouls called on them (iirc) 9 of the next 12 times down the floor. (I was counting, b/c I saw Pop talking to the official and pointed it out to my wife). At one point she said "That's not fair...why doesn't our coach do that?"

From the mouths of babes.

I'm no huge fan of Nate, but I think it's much more likely that he simply doesn't think that the team was getting "jobbed" than that he's unwilling to stick up for his players.

After the second Maggette flop Nate should have said something. Standing there and doing nothing after the third baffles me.

Huh?

That's not to say McMillan wasn't upset. He stayed on the court briefly to plead his case with lead official Bob Delaney, and he emerged from the Blazers' locker room with blood-shot eyes and a steely demeanor.

Plus, even if he didn't feel his team was getting jobbed, which I find ridiculous on its face, he still should have stood up for LMA getting 3 fouls on flops by Maggette.

The truth is that the refs probably respect Jackson and Pop, Sloan and others more than they do Nate's opinion. Nate does not have the rep.

Neither does our Blazer team. Maybe never will. Our stars do not get the calls of other stars and so too our coach.:sigh::dunno::ohno:

How do you know he did not? I do not think that getting a T is the only way to stand up to one's player...

I'd have more respect for him if he could actually run an effective offense.

Right now, he's no better than Mo Cheeks when it comes to offensive sets.

Maybe he had told Aldridge, after the first couple, to just turn and shoot over Maggette?

It seems like it would have been a reasonable bit of advice to give, given LA's height and reach advantage. And if he HAD given that advice, do you think Nate still should have received a technical foul for the refs calling LA for doing what Nate had told him not to do?

I like my 6'11" players to shoot over shorter players from 4', not from 18'. If you want to defend Maggette's flopping after putting two hands on LMA that's on you, but that is not basketball as it is supposed to be called this season.

Really? Portland is 2nd in offensive efficiency in the league. His offense is remarkably efficient and effective.

The problem is not offense on this team. It's defense. If you look - you will see that Portland is among the worst in defensive efficiency in the league. The fact that this team is over .500 should tell you how good the offense is.

I recall a few years ago when Mo broke out a new motion offense, and we reeled off 11 or 12 victories in a row. That offense looked better than the stagnant garbage we're running now. And this isn't just about not playing uptempo, it's more about the lack of cuts, movement without the ball, and inside scoring.

Hopefully, this is just a sign of our guys not being familiar with each other, but I doubt it. Nate's offense has looked the same here since it did when he was coaching in Seattle.
