If Aldridge leaves.... (1 Viewer)

In a world where LMA decides to leave, would you rather:

A) Sign-and-trade for assets

B) Let him walk and use the cap space

C) Hold onto the cap space for next summer

(Wookie is forbidden from posting that Aldridge is staying in this thread because I said "in a world" so his logic is moot.)
Your moot logic is your face.

Collect picks and junk players and see what happens.
Dude, you don't do it for guys with multiple year deals. You're collecting assets and making the best of a bad situation. Next year, you'll still have your precious capspace.

You do if they can shore up a good bench later and you get a nice pick out of it. Cap space in Portland is basically useless for attracting a FA, but if you can find a couple diamonds in the rough, gather picks, and use your remaining space to be the third team in a lopsided trade, there's some options.

I agree

My #1 target if we lose LA is Cousins.

How can we get him?

I hope someone is able to come up with a viable* way of getting him so we can keep this dream alive!

*A viable way that doesn't include Meyers, Lillard...or CJ.

Man, a frontcourt of Meyers/Cousins would work absolutely perfectly. Sigh. Sadly it will remain a dream

We will only get a good deal if LMA wants to go to a team that can't outright sign him, so I agree. No one who can outright sign him will give us anything other than pennies on the dollar.

Not so.

Aldridge can use a sign and trade to get paid more than he would in any other scenario.

I know, right? Both have legit outside shooting, both are above average passers, both are strong rebounders, DMC can dominate the paint, Meyers is beginning to develop some moves in the post, both are good defenders. They could be the most dymanic set of bigs in the league if Meyers continues to develop. Too bad it sounds like they're finally finding some stability with that team...

Say the trade was Tyson Chandler, Devin Harris, Charlie Villanueva and the 21st draft pick for Aldridge?

Never trade 1 for more than 1.

Chandler is the only part of that trade we'd ever end up keeping, and he'll never be as good as Aldridge.

Did you just call Leonard a good defender?

I did. Perhaps it was a fluke, or a flash in the pan, but he played good defense against Gasol. So until he shows otherwise I'm going to think that he's turned the corner and will continue to improve.

Used to be true but not true anymore in the new CBA.
Only incentive for a sign and trade would be a team over cap that wants him. Or a team that wants his Bird rights, allowing him to sign a 2 year deal with a PO after his first year. If they are over cap next summer, they would need his bird rights to keep him

Leonard has consistently had among the best DRtgs on the team, and as minutes went up, this remained true. He's a good defender.

This year, for sure.

His reputation is that he's still garbage.

That part is not true. If LMA signs a 1+1 deal, he looses his bird rights if traded.
Sign-and-trade contracts must be for at least three seasons (not including any option year) and no longer than four seasons3. The first year of the contract must be fully guaranteed, but the remaining seasons can be non-guaranteed. The combination of a three-year minimum with a one-year guarantee ensures that the player's new team cannot acquire the player's Bird rights any sooner than if they had signed him directly (if they wanted to re-sign him in less than three years they would first have to waive him, and lose any Bird rights -- see question number 33).

I'm very aware of that, such as what happened in Miami.

And look.at what those teams.got. NOTHING.

If we sign & trade him.to a team that could already sign him to a 4 year contract, they aren't going to start giving us assets. They'll give us shit draft picks.

He can make no more via S&T than he could by signing outright with another team.

Feel free (anyone) to correct me if I'm wrong.
