Hey...you never know. He'll probably get 16-18 a year but haggling is fun.

It's not just about some luxury tax, but looking into next year, potentially a lot of luxury tax. Like, perhaps surpassing 50M in luxury tax, depending on the situation.
I understand, but if there were a season to dip into luxury tax payroll, this would be the time. Dame won't be in his prime forever

Sure, but there's a limit. You pay tons of luxury tax if you have a contender. But if we're still losing in the 2nd round, PA isn't going to be interested in paying over $200M in salary and tax for a 2nd-tier team.

assuming that when Neil is done, we're still that 2nd tier team...we may not be. With the tax would have to come a huge upgrade in talent

8.8 million? That's NEVER going to happen. That's a good 4-5 million less per year than what we have been hearing. This is a guy who has been playing for peanuts for the past three years. He's not going to take a discount, and certainly not that much of a discount.
Crabbe is Restricted. It's not obvious he gets an offer at all, especially if we sign someone (HW) early.

How many teams have cap space? I think some team will throw a big offer at him just to see what we'll do.

I think anyone who offers Crabbe only 12 million is wasting their time. They know it will be matched. So yeah I can see someone offering 15 million. At least that number makes the Blazers think twice.
Crabbe will get paid. I like Crabbe & believe he will get better BUT for how much it will probably cost to keep him... let the market determine Crabbe's value (which again most likely is too high BUT bring him back IF the $ is right) but put more of our eggs in the replacing him w/ Bazemore basket; I've been promoting Bazemore (pay the man some good coin & lock him up for as long as u can) for a while now  Bazemore is ~3yrs older vs. Crabbe BUT it's known what he can give you now AND I believe Baze will cont. improve also :ygrin:

If we sign HW first, then zero teams will throw $12 mil at Crabbe. We'd just sit there with their $$$ tied up for THREE days, and then match. Nobody wants their $$$ tied up for no good reason. However, if we sign HW first and Crabbe would get an offer, it would have to be in the $16 mil range. That would make us hesitate.

OTOH, if we haven't signed a FA yet, then MAYBE a team will will throw a $12 mil offer at Crabbe. That would give us 3 days to come to an agreement with an outside FA, Neil would be under some serious pressure. However, it would be a big risk for the other team, because Neil could sign someone and then match. Again, the opposing team would have their $$$ tied up for the first 3 days for Free Agency.

The final scenario is really the blazers nightmare: someone signs Crabbe on the first day of Free Agency for $16 mil/year. I don't think it will happen, but if it does, we could be locked into paying a backup huge $$$, which is not where we want to be. As YOU (and others) have said, I think in this scenario we sign him, and then trade him later.

Or we sign him and trade CJ. If we strike out in free agency, we will have to seek another star player through other means. Trading CJ might be the only choice.

Sorry, man. The only way we trade CJ is if he tears his ACL.

I disagree. Neil traded Eric Gordon for Chris Paul, and that was after he told Gordon he wouldn't trade him. CJ is essentially Eric Gordon when he was healthy. If the right deal came along, I think Neil would trade CJ.

Yeah but Gordon and teammates didn't have the special bond that Dame & CJ have... I love CJ but if the right deal came along (Cousins) I would trade him... I just think to Neil he is untouchable.

But did Neil draft Gordon?

IMO Neil has favoritism and special bond with guys that he drafted. I could be wrong, but it sure seems that way.

I doubt anyone is untouchable. Its just that the list of possible players that you would trade Dame or CJ for.....is a lot shorter than it is for our other players.

I like CJ. I think he's a very gifted player, but we happen to have a very solid option in Crabbe. While Crabbe might not be as explosive as CJ, he can shoot and he plays better defense. If we can sign Whiteside and flip CJ into another really good player, like Jimmy Butler, I would do it.

Is CJ and Crabbe better or worse than Crabbe and Butler?

I would say worse, because I think Crabbe/Butler is a MUCH better defensive combo, and I feel better about Butler playing small forward.
You know Crabbe is only 3/4 of an inch shorter. Why not just play him at the 3?

Chicago just turned down a Butler for Kris Dunn trade AFTER they lost Rose. Why do we think they would trade him for CJ?
We keep coming up with these trade scenarios for CJ that don't make sense to me.

I agree. Crabbe should be our SF. His wingspan is 4 inches longer than Butlers and his standing reach is 2 inches longer.
Crabbe fits perfectly at SF with a center like Whiteside or Howard......And CJ at SG

Do you think a rookie point guard has more value than the reigning MIP who is fresh off a 20 ppg season?

That reigning MIP is getting paid the max in a year while the rookie PG is on a locked in rookie scale contract for four years.

He'd honestly need to put on a few pounds

No but CJ is a SG and so is Butler. So I guess I don't get why they would make that trade. Dunn is nice young PG and if they are rebuilding...that move would have made more sense. (Since they lost Rose) Bottom line is they hold Butler in high regard. And for good reason.

Dunn is a complete unknown

Interesting since you always seem to promote building through the draft. (or trading for draft picks) If Dunn is an unknown after playing 4 years of college ball in the Big East, what does that say about every other draft pick?

You are right though. Butler for Dunn would have been stupid.

Seems to me they're doing a teardown, and he was a guy that wanted out a couple years ago. CJ is a dude that you can build around. He has a superstar personality, and the game to back it up.

Goodness! When you pay the max for anyone, shouldn't there be reasonable expectations that you will have a top contender team?

No, not at all. Most teams have a "max" player. They can't all be top contenders.
