well, he revolutionized the thinking behind what a shortstop could do defensively, being so tall and fast, with such incredible range, he allowed brooks to play closer to the line (ever seen those great plays he made going right, over the bag? thank the blade for that) and allowing the center fielder and left fielder to play deeper, thus cutting off balls over their heads. before him, most SS were 5'8", and taller players were groomed for a corner infield spot. he basically paved the way for arod.

duh

...LMAO...not sure what's more hilarious, that you would assert something like that, or that you'd actually believe it.

im open to an opposing viewpoint backed up by relevant statistics if you have any

ill wait

read the thread again, this time do it v e r y s l o w l y

ill be waiting for your apology

...It will likely be a very long wait...it will come immediately after your documentation.

...instead of more tap dancing, why not point to exactly what you're babbling about?

if i MUST repeat myself, he had, statistically, the best defensive SS season in the history of baseball

jeez, get it together guys, reading is fundamental

Jesus is this your thing? Playing dumb?

You are quite good at it

...lemme get this straight...according to you, because Bellanger had a "stellar" season, that translates into him being "revolutionary"?

...for at least the second time in this thread, you've made vague and somewhat encrypted statements and then acted surprised when no one knew what the hell you were talking about, and you then proceeded to ridicule them.

...I'm done with your manic ramblings...you may carry on this convo by yourself.

A huge stretch if I ever heard one. Brooks was a great 16 consecutive gold glover, not because he had Aparicio and Belanger playing alongside him. Brooks would of been great without even having a short stop! Brooks if you've seen him play in person, not on old films. Brooks, (on occassion), mastered the art of playing deep on the edge of the OF grass, and off the line, tempting batters to send lightning down HIS line. Brooks range was beyond the norm. Size was irrelevant to Brooks ability to get to a ball, because of size. Brooks was great on his own accord. To say otherwise is blasphemy to one of the greatest 3rd baseman to ever play the game.

Did I mention Vizquel was 5'8" some say 5'9" to Marks 6'1" so the debate on size is redundant. A players heigth doesn't determine his speed, or accuracy, ask the scatty short Vizquel....Ridiculous point to defend or make.

Omar played for 7 Teams over 24 years.

It would behoove you to move on off this subject of defending who was just another decent fielder, with nothing but a glove.

Compare Vizquel's lifetime body of work (.985), in 2,709 games at SS, with a .272 B'avg.:- to Mark's lifetime .977 fielding percentage, in 1,942 games at SS. Hhhmmmm.....Did I say Omar played until he was 45 years young, and was the oldest Infield Player to ever play the game.

Omar won 11 gold gloves with 3 Teams, and also won gold gloves in both the NL and AL, now Omar was the epitome of a great quick fast defender, who could fill the hole, unlike Belanger ever dreamed of. Omar could play 2nd and 3rd base adeptly, Belanger no! Omar could of been placed anywhere in the INF or OF, unlike Belanger.

Belanger did not pave the way for anyone....he couldn't work his way out of a open box....I don't like putting down guys like Mark, who I enjoyed watching his defensive skills. Yet he was never second to none, he was the norm with a glove in his era. Hell, I'd rather watch Ernie Banks (with his one gold glove), Concepcion, Bowa, Burleson, Fregosi, from that era, and others too. Or in the 80s, Trammel, Yount, Ripken, Tony Fernandez, The Wizard of Oz, Larkin, Renteria, and of course Omar Vizquel.

Believe it or not, Tulowitszki, has the best SS fielding percentage of all players to ever play the position, so far. Or, Honus Wagner, (prior to Gold Gove Awards), had a lifetime .940 fldg. pctg. at SS. Honus playing in the 'dead ball era' was as good as any SS to play the game, even with a fldg. pctg. not to modern era standards, was still best at his position with the glove and bat, year upon year. If anyone has ever tried playing with a 3 finger glove, used in that era, they would understand, why any HOF fielder had less a fldg. pctg. than players in the modern era.

...do you have "any relevant statistics" or not?

My post was directed at Mark Belanger's nephew twice removed on his mothers aunts side. Speaking of which, when EXACTLY did Belanger have the best defensive SS season in history? And what numbers indicated that? And please don't use the stats that only you & a few others use when you're trying to give the false illusion that you actually know something about the game.. I'll wait.

...lol, my bad, rick. I had been going back and forth with the other guy and I misread your post as his.

...but the good news is that since your reply was the best post of the day, this makes you a "revolutionary" poster. :ghoti:

Can I be be stellar too or can it only be one or the other?

...I dunno, I'll have to consult the message board manifesto manual..

Why don't you just ask that poster that you've been so rude to all night. He seems to be very knowledgeable. Especially about light hitting average fielding short stops.

"Sometimes it's best to keep your mouth shut & just have people THINK you're stupid, then to open up your mouth & remove all doubt".

Can you tread water?

...lol...batting practice.

Literally......ROFLMAO.....you two have always had some of the best one liners, in the history of Yankees Message Boards.

Shades of Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin, the Smothers Brothers.....Chase, Martin, Akyroyd, Bill Murray, Short, J. Candy, E. Levy....the Flying Schmenge Brothers!!!

Vegas is looking for any 1 or 2 man comedy act.....Comedy like this is hard to come by, or find these days...!!! I will seek out an agent for you both. You can alternate opening, then come together and do your best Laurel and Hardy...! If only I can awaken Sinatra, he would gladly open for you both, it could revive his career...!

Sad thing is, some don't know a great one liner when it hits them in the head like a cast iron skillet....

"I just wanna know whats the guys name playing first base?"
"Whats on 2nd"
"I'm not asking you who's on 2nd"
"Who's on 1st"
"I don't know"
"He's on 3rd"

One if not the greatest baseball comedy of all time...!

"Who" did you say was on 1st? Wait, you said "who" is at 3rd, so who's on 3rd, "what's" on 2nd? "I don't know" is "where", and "He's" at 3rd, or is it "who's" on 3rd. Has "He" scored yet, or did "He" even come to bat yet. "Yet", is in the batters box, and I "don't know", but "wheres" on deck. So "when" must be up after "where"? "How" must be in the clubhouse? "What" happened to "Why", "Or" did "what" and "why" ever come to bat, "yet". No, "yet" has yet to come to bat, I think.......don't ask "me", "I'm" only watching and listening. LMAO....Scared to death to ask about "Is" and "Should Be"...!!

so is "I' and "I'm" even in the game, or did "they" get tossed out? "I' didn't get tossed, so "what" happened to "Him" did "he" get tossed too? "He" and "Him", are those two twins? "When" does "why" bat in the lineup? "Wait", "why", "I" and "I'm" are, did "they" even come to the park today? (head spinning"

I will get the Martini's ready for you two. How many Olives would you like, how dry do you like those, shake or stir? On the rocks? No on Ice. How many Aspirin would "You" like with "that"?

The question on this skit was always, "what's the only position never mentioned in the skit". I'll let you guys think about it before I tell you.

Also there was a blooper in this skit that because the skit was so damn funny, no one picked up on it until MANY years later.

I performed this skit with a friend many times with a friend in my younger days & it was while I saying it that I caught myself. Here's the era......

Costello after describing himself as a good catcher describes a play as follows, "I pick up the ball & throw it to 1st base. Whoever it is grabs the ball so the guy runs to 2nd. WHO picks up the ball & throws it to WHAT. WHAT throws it to I DON'T KNOW, I DON'T KNOW throws it back to TOMORROW a triple play"

Abbott: "Yes"
Costello: "Another gets up & hits a long fly ball to BECAUSE.................

Did you see the boo boo? After a triple play, another guy wouldn't be getting up.

Just thought I'd share.

Thanks for the additional clarification Rick....Good Work.!!...honestly I didn't know all this. I only saw the film, which you mentioned, that became a hit decades later. I would of loved to of seen the un-edited original skit...I can envision the riot of fun you had as a kid.

I can only guess, the position in question may be short stop? I imagine this guess may be incorrect though.

Who's on 1st
Whats on 2nd
I don't know is on 3rd
Tomorrow is pitching
Today is catching
Why is in left field
Because is in center field
And the short stop is...I don't give a darn

So the only position not mentioned is right field..
