ive been to rutgers not all of em are nappy headed hoes lol j/k... he messed up, i dont see why everyone wants him fired, suer it is a big deal, but everyone messese up, they should of given him more than 2 weeks though

This guy has listeners? I'm sorry, the year is 2007, this dude talks (and not to mention looks) like he belongs in the 60's or some old Western movie. I realize I may sound ignorant, but how is this not being made a big issue? Tim Hardaway gets ripped like there's no tommorow for his anti-gay rant, but people believe he's sorry after he calls a team "nappy headed ho's"??

I was listening to a debate about this on the radio today, and a lot of African American callers said how is what he said any less demeaning than a lot of rap lyrics out there?

That is an excellent point; I really have no response to that. In fact, it just shows the gap in our society when it comes to issues such as these; there is a double standard that exists to them (i.e - A movie being allowed to be named "White Men Can't Jump"). I think the fact that these comments were said by a person who is pretty much completely detached from and unaware of contemporary black culture and society is what makes it worse.

I think the difference between Imus' comments and rap music is that he's attacking a real group of people, while rappers are using the word to refer to a concept or description. Now I'm not defending some rap music's derogatory attitude towards women. I think its wrong as well. But Imus' comments are offensive on a whole different level and are more of a personal attack. If some rapper spouted a line calling the Rutgers basketball team a bunch of "nappy-headed hoes," I don't think there would be any less outrage.

I know what you're talking about, but that's just a bad example. White Men Can't Jump is all about Woody Harrelson hustling people who buy into that stereotype (among other things). The first time I seen this guy I was like, "no wonder they keep him on the radio, damn!" Those remarks he made were ignorant though.
Oh, and the first time I heard of him was also with the remarks, but before I heard the whole story I thought they were going to talk about a new Apple product since I was watching this on the regular news. lol
They pronounced his name as [Eye-Muss] so I was like, wtf?

I'm not going to blast Imus again, because I've been doing it all week and you guys seem to have already covered those bases.
What I find just unbelievably stupid and ironic about this is the fustercluck it's become. A nutjob says 'nappy headed, tattooed rough looking girls', and it turns into a race battle and the #1 story in newspapers, the evening news, hell, I think Bush is preparing a speech to the entire nation regarding the incident. Guys, just stfu about it and he'll fade away! (not speaking to anyone in particular, I'm just frustrated with the coverage he's getting) Does no one else see that all we're doing now is debating semantics and pointing fingers and talking about how far America still has to go in realizing racial tolerance? If we would concentrate on educating people and actually multiculturalizing ourselves rather than just pissing and moaning every time some chump opens his mouth, we'd be FAR better off.
I'm more disgusted with the press this situation has received than I am with his comments. And that's not to say I don't think he's an asshole - he's been an asshole for years, these comments shouldn't come as a suprise to anyone. The guy's like Rush Limbaugh or Gregg Doyell: they're only around because they're so good at making people angry. Just stop giving people like Imus the satisfaction that they can say five words and become the biggest celebrity in the country for a week.
And for the record, I listened to most of Sharpton's 'inverview' with him, and it reaffirmed that I dislike him just as much as Imus or Limbaugh. It's just as bad to make a career out of being a racist as it is to make a career out of being a professional rabble rouser like him. I'm not criticizing him for any of his work towards diversifying and helping our nation become more aware of others. But much the same way the word Imus makes me think 'jackass', Sharpton's name just makes me think 'oh God, here we go again'.
In closing, my point is this: look around at what has been accomplished through all of this talk and coverage about the Imus situation. Absolutely fucking nothing. All everyone has done is fight and play the blame game. This makes us a more tolerant and diverse country? No, it just makes it harder for us as a society to move closer to true equality. Just ignore people like Imus and the discussions about him, and maybe they'll start to fade away. Lord knows what we're doing now doesn't help.

The sad part is that he had to be interviewed by sharpton before the media gave it attention. No one likes Sharpton it doesnt matter what race you are. Thats the sad part. A goofball like Sharpton did what a legitimate person shouldve done.
