APNewsBreak: Pentagon may revise same-sex benefits


WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Pentagon is poised to extend health care, housing and other benefits to the same-sex spouses of military members by the end of August, but may reverse earlier plans to provide benefits to gay partners who are not married.

According to a draft Defense Department memo obtained Wednesday by The Associated Press, the department instead may provide up to 10 days of leave to military personnel in same-sex relationships so they can travel to states where they can marry legally.

The significance of such a move cannot be understated. The military is going to encourage same sex couples to go to states where they can legally marry, then is going to recognize their marriages.

It won't be long before the whole government recognizes these marriages, too.

It is a huge mistake to take finest Navy in the world and turn it into a secular purist liberal experiment. The crew morale is the most important element of the combat efficiency of a warship. 77% of military personnel are Christians, only slightly less than the 80% of the general population. It is pretty damn doubtful any positive effects on combat efficiency will attributable to these policy changes.

Those are the exact same things - readiness, etc. - that racist assholes used to try to keep the army from being integrated in the 1940s. The proof is in the pudding, though. Plenty ready.

If anything, the military has been lowering its standards because they're having trouble recruiting. Well, there's 35M+ ready, willing, and able bodied soles who'd throw themselves on a grenade to save your sorry ass. They happen to be gay, tough.
