Mike Goodes leads after first round of Insperity Invitational
the day belonged to Long John Daly and his Loudmouth britches, and the PGA Champions Tour rookie proved up to the scrutiny, followed by an adoring gallery that, numerically speaking, may well have outnumbered all the other players' trailing entourages combined.
Daly, whose tenure on the regular tour was defined by the occasionally grand triumph and frequent train wrecks, played himself into nominal contention in his first-ever round as a senior golfer Friday, shooting a 2-under-par 70 that left him four strokes behind pace-setter Mike Goodes in the Insperity Invitational.
Jeff Maggert, Jesper Parnevik tie for Insperity Invitational lead
Hometown favorite Jeff Maggert really didn't need his putter on the final hole, but Jesper Parnevik did.
The result of Maggert's kick-in birdie and Parnevik's par save on the difficult 18th hole on the Tournament Course at The Woodlands Country Club means players from a world apart will go into Sunday's final round of the Insperity Invitational tied for the lead at 7-under 137.
Jeff Maggert has been trying to win a professional golf tournament in Houston since 1987 and another opportunity would slip from his grasp late Sunday. The Woodlands resident just couldn't get putts to drop after he roared out to a two-shot lead over his 36-hold co-leader, Jesper Parnevick, following a birdie-birdie start in the final round of the PGA Champions Tour Insperity Invitational.
It was Jesper Parnevik who led the charge thereafter, shooting a 67 and prevailing by four shots over Maggert, first-round leader Dan Goodes and David Frost. It was Parnevik's first title in his second year on the PGA's Champions Tour but, more significantly, his first win anywhere since 2001.
