Just handed my old iMac down to my 9 year old son and want to make sure I set up the Safari browser so he won't be able to go to any shady websites. We don't think he will, but some of his friends who come over have had computers for awhile. How do I do this?

There is software available that says it can do that, but I don't think it works that well.

Did you set up his "L'il HCP" moniker for this joint yet?

When my kids were smaller, we installed a program on their computers called "Net Nanny". It worked quite well. It blocked bad sites and could even limit the amount of time they were online.

Harder to do now that they are teenagers!

That's my fear. I could see my boy--who will certainly be much more comfortable with technology that I ever will be--say, "Aw, how cute. Daddy put up a firewall." A few keystrokes and he's surfing the darkest corners of the web.

install keylogger. have it email you everything he types every day.

pray "greg oden's cock" doesn't appear in his keylog.

I don't have kids, but if I did, there's no way I would let them surf the web in private.

This is probably a big thing. If you don't want them surfing the web without you there, make sure you have a pw on the computer.

live and let live. stop being computer nazis.

information is free!

Another solution is to keep your kid from spending a lot of time with computers. Kids that play a lot of sports, probably don't have time to learn how to bypass a firewall

LOL at any of these parents actually being able to shield their kids from reality.

All censoring and spying on them will do is drive them away and kill your credibility with them.

Better to accept that you have a responsibility to teach them judgement, responsibility, right and wrong. Do that and they'll be fine people.

Save all the parental preaching bitches! Thanks for the ideas. BeerBoy, the Safari on this old iMac is so old, it doesn't have those security options your link shows. I'm going to have to update it as far as I can an try again.

I actually agree with this.

oh yeah...internet=reality.. I forgot!

Information is free, education (degree) costs money.

Bah... most of my professors only read from the textbook/powerpoint anyway. The information is already out there. Apparently I just need to listen to some old guy recite it back to me for it to be worth something. :dunno:

This is important... you have to teach kids what is right and wrong and how to make the right decisions when no one is looking. Just thinking that shielding them from everything bad doesn't help them. My sister home schooled her kids... kept they away from everything bad... wouldn't let them throw fits etc... and they were PSYCHO when they got into the real world. Made all kinds of horrible choices when young.

Lol, a buddy of mine had that software installed and "fergie naked peas" was one of his first finds.

I was looking at all kinds of porn when I was around 14 or 15. It got old to me, a couple years later I started wanting the real thing. I turned out pretty normal :)

HCP's son will be movin' like Bernie any day now
