That's the best way to decide. "Do I stream a lot or do I collect files?" "Do I play a shit ton of big 2gb games?" Etc.

yeah I'm going more towards minimum 64 gb the more I think about it.

I was right there, and then I was like, "But for an extra $100 I'll have a whole 64GB more, when I was going to pay $100 for 32GB more before... And 112GB extra for $300 more is like only $2.75 per GB instead of $4.10 per GB to go from 16 to 64..."

true. And the hit would be a lot less with 18 months to pay it off.

The 16G or whatever you have is used for music and videos you want to carry around, sure.

But it's also used for your browser cache, for your apps, for your apps' data. That includes your text messaging, email, etc.

To give you an idea of what the space might be used for, my iPad is using:

TapaTalk HD (to browse this site): 75MB
Messages: 200MB (text messages)
Mail: 200MB
Photos: 1GB
DirecTV (awesome remote control app): 236MB
NBA Game Time: 90MB
Netflix: 65MB

If you install Apple productivity software (it's free): Pages, Numbers, Keynote combined 1.3GB

And so on.

I travel a bit for work, so I like to be able to load a handful of movies onto the iPad to watch while waiting at the airport or during the flight. I did an east coast round trip flight and watched the Godfather trilogy. To have enough movies to have something of a choice what to watch, I figure takes me 10G or so. Airports and on flights is a situation where you might not want to pay for bandwidth to stream video - it's expensive.

You'll also need enough free space to download and install iOS updates. If you ever don't have enough space, you'll have a lot of fun (NOT!) figuring out how to make enough space freed.

If you want to be able to freely install apps that you might find useful, bigger is better.

FWIW

Not that it is related to what to buy, but Pages, Numbers, etc aren't free. I think you are thinking of the update from last year that was a free upgrade. The apps themselves are still $9.99 on the App Store.

Having had the retina iPad and now a Nexus 7, I have to say I really like the smaller form factor. I know the mini is similarly sized to the N7, just a different aspect ratio, so if I was choosing between the Air and Mini, I'd have to go w/ the Mini. Since there is no expandable/upgradable storage, I try to go for the version with the most capacity. I would also say think about paying the extra $100 or so for the LTE version. Then just go to T-Mobile, get a free Sim and you'll have 200MB/month free. 200MB obviously isn't much, but it's great knowing that if in a pinch, I could use the tablet w/o wifi. Then, if you need more than the 200MB, you can just buy a 1GB block for 10 bucks or something.

Good to know. When they announced it, I swear they said upgrade and then when I checked the App Store, I saw the $9.99 price. I wouldn't mind trying out Numbers on my rMPB, but not for $19.99 when Excel works perfectly fine and I already have it installed.

I bought iWork with my laptop 3 years ago. It came on CD or DVD, not from the App Store which was brand new at the time. I was not able to update those apps through the app store, and when I contacted Apple about it, they said I wouldn't be able to. A couple years later, they came out with Mavericks and dramatically upgraded versions of the iWork apps and people in my situation were SOL. A lot of people complained and Apple (within a couple days) made the upgrades available through the app store for me. Then they made the apps free, period.

It was a huge deal considering M$ sells you an OS for $300 and productivity apps (M$ Office) for another $100+. Free OS, free productivity apps from Apple.

I've not at all had a need for the M$ apps, even though they are available for Mac. I've worked with a dozen clients and been able to open and create the various M$ file formats. The user interface is a little less "everything including the kitchen sink, good luck figuring it out," but it's been really easy to make gorgeous presentations and slick documents.

Again, FWIW.

Does it show up as costing $19.99 in app store on your rMBP?

I hear they're going to have Office for Ipad. Doubt I'll need it though.

Yeah, in the Mac App Store, it's $19.99 because I've never owned it. Just like on the iTunes App Store it's $9.99. If my wife didn't get a free copy of Office from work (or $5 or something), I would have just paid the $40 for Pages and Numbers.

Mavericks?

If those are your 2 options and you are OS agnostic, then I would say iPad. I know people love them, but I have no desire for any of the Samsung software (or 99% of it).

Not my only 2 options but whats better, Google Nexus 7?

ended up going with the air. I love the size of it and the speed... but forgot how much I hate how locked the OS is. I can return it with no restocking fee, or I can consider jailbreaking it but never tried that before. I know it voids the warranty, but the air just felt so perfect compared to other larger tablets.

did you figure out that to use the "mobile" version of xhamster yet?

iPad air is a bit fragile, more so than the other iPads. I recommend the 4th Generation with the lightning connector. It's almost as powerful and more durable. Plus it will be cheaper now that the iPad Air is out.
