A Michigan man who authorities say was trying to return more than 10,000 cans and bottles for 10 cents apiece has pleaded guilty to one count of beverage return of nonrefundable bottles.

The Livingston Daily Press & Argus of Howell reports that Brian Edward Everidge of Columbiaville faces up to five years in prison at his Nov. 3 sentencing.

He entered his plea Friday in Livingston County Circuit Court in Howell.

Authorities have said that Everidge was stopped for speeding April 27 by state police in Livingston County. Inside the truck he was driving were aluminum cans and glass bottles that police were told were from Kentucky.

To legally get a bottle or can refund in Michigan, beverages must be bought in the state.

faces up to five years in prison

Fucking hateful Republican state legislators. I've said for years that prison sentences are too long, especially for first offenders. All sentences except murder should be cut to 1% to 10% of what they are now. 1% of 5 years is 18 days. Yes, that's enough to change this particular behavior.

And in this case, make that 1% of 1% of 5 years, which is .18 days, which is under 5 hours. Actually, the police talking to a first offender usually scares him enough without the expense of a trial, much less ruining his employable life by making him a felon.

A good legal system would have the goal of changing behavior, not revenge, so a lot of sentences would be zero with no trial.

Then there's the issue of, states give 5 cents, but Michigan gives 10 cents, which incentivizes crossing the state border, which produces the true goal of state legislators, which is to maximize the number of men who live under bridges due to being felons.
