Is it Thorn, Stefanski, Kiki or luck?

Thorn's first draft was Kenyon. Then Thorn's second draft was great... he got RJ, Collins and Scalabrine. Third draft we got Nenad.
Then we had a run of shitty drafts.

Now Ed goes, Kiki comes in, and it's a great draft again. The one constant... Thorn.

So did Rod turn the drafting reins over to Ed and he sucked?
When Kiki comes in did Rod take a more active role in the draft?
Did Kiki call the shots in this draft?
Or did we just get lucky?

Ed becomes GM in the summer of 2004 and the Nets drafted:
2004: Victor Khryapa and Christian Drejer (Khryapa sold to Portland and Drejer never makes it into NBA)
2005: Antoine Wright and Mile Ilic (Mile out of the league and Antoine about to be)
2006: Marcus Williams, Josh Boone, and Hasan Adams (Jury still out on Marcus, Josh a good back-up big, Hasan out of the league)
2007: Sean Williams (too early to tell, but he has potential)

I know Ed played a role in the Kenyon and the RJ, Collins, Scalabrine, Nenad drafts, but once he became GM they sucked.
I wonder if he was the one screwing everything up. Will be interesting watching how Philly draft picks turn out over the next few years.

Good question. I'd say much of it has to be attributed to luck. We were lucky to get a former Spurs FO guy to get us Nenad. We were lucky Sean had some "issues" to allow him to drop to us. We were lucky teams were down on Josh after his senior season, and he dropped to us.

We were unlucky that Wright and Marcus's issues turned out to affect them more than expected.

So I'd say...Thorn and luck, mostly.

What could be more interesting would be to see what Kiki can do for us in free agency - clearly, with Ed and Thorn, we had barely any luck.

Early on our luck was good. MacCulloch, A-Train, and A. Johnson. Did it gett worse as Stefanski got more influence?

shouldnt say if this is a good or bad draft.... This could have been a horrible draft for all we know.. we wont know the answer to this until 5 years from now... they can all turn out busts or stars

True, but for some reason everyone seems more in agreement and excited about this draft than any other in the past. Probably since 2001 draft.

Damn, we have Memphis Tiger fans coming in here and congratulating us for a 2nd round pick! Didn't see any Texas A&M fans doing that after we got Wright.

Actually, you've got a point there. It seems it did - I'm just wondering if it's because of Stefanski, or because we just suck at free agency.

Although, we did get Eddie House. Only good FA I can remember.

I'm wondering too. Just dawned on me and I thought it would make for an interesting discussion.

We always talked about him being the brains behind the curtain because we heard a lot of good things about him. But I'm starting to wonder if it was the opposite.

Will be interesting to see how Speights does in Philly or what kind of free agents they get.

RJ was a nice pick, but I don't know how you can give Thorn credit for Collins and Scalabrine and fault Stefanski for Antoine Wright, Marcus Williams and Josh boone, they all seem like decent but not that good player taken at a point in the draft when you mostly expect decent but not that good players. I like what I've seen from Sean Williams as well. Kenyon Martin was luck.

If you want to give Kiki credit as a great drafter as well, he got Carmelo Anthony due to two pieces of luck, first in the lottery, and second when Detroit decided to take a chance on a risky seven footer instead of the sure SF. Other than that, what did he make great draft picks?

Collins was a starter on a Finals team. Yeah, chronic injuries in his knees got the better of him and his shelf life was short, but he was effective as a low post defensive anchor for a few years. Scalabrine had a decent role off the bench. Wright always sucked no matter how much time he was given. I admitted Boone was a decent pick.

Josh Boone was a great, great pick.

The other two were as disastrous as they get.

Yep. And I love the moves that Kevin Pritchard has made, but I admit that it became much easier when we won the right to draft Oden. It is hard to win without some luck no matter how good you are. Some people do deserve more credit for making their own luck and taking advantage of it when they get it though. I'm just not sure that Thorn and Kiki deserve more or less credit than Spefanski as far as drafting goes.

Absolutely... couldn't believe so many teams passed on CDR. Luck brought him down to #40 and you gotta give credit to Thorn and Kiki for not letting him go.
