Bingo. Dude was horrible going to the basket. Just had no handles whatsoever - the move I saw him try the most was two hard dribbles, then jump. Didn't matter where he was. It was like two dribbles and something in his brain short circuited and an alarm went off that said "pick up your dribble before you lose it, hurry!". Of course that led to him getting his shot blocked, getting caught in the air with no where to go, or just throwing up some wildly ridiculous shot that had no chance of going in. Every year I expected him to come to camp with a new wrinkle - the ability to dribble the ball all the way to the basket. I figured he'd take an off season and just spend hours each day on his handles. After all, he had the athleticism. But it never happened. For all of the summers he spent with Kobe, they never got around to working on his handles. Some guys are born to be one dimensional 3 point shooters. Jason Kopono was never going to be a high flying, acrobatic swingman. But Martel didn't have to be like that. He's a good enough athlete to have a versatile offensive game. For whatever reason, it never happened. And I doubt it will. He's still a decent shooter, so it's not hard to imagine him averaging 14-16 PPG or so if he gets minutes. But I can't see more than that. It will be interesting to see Minny fan's reaction after witnesses a high flying dunk by Web. They'll be surprised by his hops & athleticism and assume that he has more offensive game than advertised - probably think they got a steal by trading for him. Then in his next game, he'll go back to his two hard dribble/jump move & throw up a couple of air balls . . .
