Is there any doubt that Matthews was a steal?

Without Wesley Matthews this team would suck so much worse than it already does.

I have a few friends that are Utah fans and were PISSED that Utah didn't match. Kept telling me how good he is and how much he would help the blazers. I didn't believe it then... but now I do.

I wish he's rebound and assist more, but it might not be a bad idea to put him and Nicolas in the starting 5, and bring Brandon off the bench until he gets his shit together.

He still seems like a chucker, but I am giving him the benefit of the doubt because our offense is so pathetic.

He's basically everything I'd hoped Bayless could be (+ some defense, minus some FTA), so, yeah.

He's just a big strong guard who throws his weight around. Not especially good at anything, just uses his weight well. I can see how he wasn't drafted.

You're right... I don't see why anyone would draft a guy who is capable of putting up multiple 20+ games since being inserted in the starting lineup.

That describes Patty Mills, and he almost wasn't drafted.

You referred only to Matthews scoring 20, and I said Mills can do the same. Mills Is also "a guy who is capable of putting up multiple 20+ games [if] inserted in the starting lineup."

Obviously, with his size, Matthews is better at defense, rebounding, and getting inside. He's a big wide guard who tries to speak well. I can see how he wasn't drafted.

Notice tonight how Mills was passing to Rudy under the basket, world-style? Including alley-oops. Mills is better than Bayless.

I think more than anything he's got one of those mentalities that say "if nobody else is going to do something, then fuck it, let me do it!" either that or his internal dialog runs more like, "Holy shit, why is everybody standing around and can I buy a screen or a pick for chrissakes?!?"

He's a decent SG with an incomplete game who's paid twice what he's worth. A solid backup.

You must be joking. The guy hit 5 of 7 three-pointers the other night, and he led the Blazers in scoring tonight with 26 points. I'll take that kind of throwing your weight around any day of the week.

Yep, I'm pretty excited tonight after we held on to beat the Clippers. We kept a 3-point lead after losing a 21-point lead, only by getting some of their guys thrown out or injured.

Matthews did well against the Clippers on our home court and we pulled out the big win at home against the Clippers. Good game against the Clippers, Wesley. Always a big win when we can surprise the Clippers.

so it's matthews fault that roy and aldridge suck. i see.

Matthews would've been a bigger steal if we had drafted him instead of Victor Claver. Then we'd be paying him a lot less.

solid BACKUP?? He was the STARTING SHOOTING GUARD for a team that reached the second round in the Western Conference playoffs. And he was a ROOKIE. He's starter-caliber in this league. And hasn't reached his ceiling.

Related to??? It was widely suspected on the old ESPN Blazers board that jlprk was nothing more than a Maris sock puppet.

Of course, he could easily dispell that theory by telling us how much he thought Sergio sucked. I mean come one, if he's going to bag on someone as productive as Wesley Matthews has been, surely he must agree that Sergio was human turnover machine who couldn't shoot to save his life, or guard a chair without tackling it from behind.

Matthews has pleasantly surprised me. When Portland signed him, I thought of him as the caliber of a solid reserve on a good/great team. IMO, he's so far been quite a bit better than that. If he can keep it up, it's the first bit of good fortune to come the Blazers' way in a while (maybe since the 2007 draft lottery).

He won't speak to me at the family get-togethers.

So I get stuck out on the patio every time drinking with Boob.

Yep, an undrafted rookie starting for a Jerry Sloan coached team that won 53 games. If he can start on that team, he can start on 2/3 of the teams in the league. Especially, since he's not just a scorer, He plays at both ends of the court. Sloan wouldn't have started him if he didn't.

I've had a good feeling about him since the signing. Maybe it was because I enjoy stealing assets away from the Jazz, but I've never hated his contract and I thought he was exactly the kind of player we needed to be adding to this roster.

I never hated his contract either. The front-loading is just noise...the substance was that it was an MLE. The MLE for a solid young player is worthwhile, especially when it's not money that could really be rolled over and used for bigger free agent signings. It's a good example of how to use Paul Allen's money.

Exactly. You're a smart guy. You should consider becoming a moderator
