What I don't get is, why take someone through the event (misery?) of watching the Blazers play courtside, only to then say goodbye to them - and the world - for evermore?

Just seems a bit of cruel paradox to me. I don't know.

Anyhoo................

From: Canzano's Reaching-Out-And-Touching-Someone Piece

He e-mailed months ago, asking what he should do.

Vipul Patel wanted to buy a couple of courtside tickets to a Trail Blazers game, but they're sold out for the season. I told him to try to find a scalper, then I forgot about him.

Shame on me.

Because the 27-year old Patel, a senior financial analyst at Intel, asked again. And again. And finally, thinking this was getting ridiculous, I fired back: "Why don't you just sit in the second or third row?"

His reply hit like a bag of bricks.

"My brother is going to become a monk."

In December, Vipul's younger brother, Deepesh, 25, will give up all his worldly possessions. He'll keep a sheet to wear, a bowl to eat from, and a prayer kit to use for daily rituals. He'll even take a new Hindu name.

Then he will board a plane to India and never be permitted to talk with his friends or family again. "The soul has no relations and no attachment," Deepesh explained. "Everyone in the world becomes our family."

What we have here is a long goodbye, see...........

....................After a 32-hour flight from India on Thursday, Deepesh arrived at Portland's airport wearing the same gray polo shirt he had on a year ago when he was dropped off. He had no checked baggage. He carried only his college backpack, slung over his shoulder. When the Patel brothers came together, they bowed and touched each other's feet out of respect.

Then they fist-bumped.

The next month will be spent with friends and family. And with no regrets, the brothers said. And, maybe, too, it will include a farewell to the Trail Blazers, side by side, as they always were as young boys.

Said Deepesh: "This is a time to say 'Goodbye.' "

I hope they find tickets though. Never knew about the whole not being allowed to see your family. That sucks.

I just read that and realized I graduated from Benson in the same class as the guy that is becoming the monk. He was in all of my honors classes with me. Really nice guy. Hopefully someone will step up and help them out with tickets.

I remember hearing about that on 95.5, the man taking his brother called in about tickets. If I had some to give away, I'd do it.

If I had some gift certificate for a shrink- I'd give them to the brother. Not being able to speak to your family ever again? What a kook. Who would do that voluntarily? Not to mention not being able to catch the Oden-nation dynasty!!

Maybe someone should have him listen to this song.

That's explains a lot, that he went to Benson. If he had gone to Grant, he would have hooked up with a lot of hot chicks and would not have to become a Monk in the first place.

Also, I just checked and they have the LeaguePass in India!

This is a very odd story. Since when do monks have bachelor parties?
One last blowout before starting to do what he believes in? Something ain't right about that.

Exactly. As I had mentioned, it seemed paradoxical (to say the least) to me.

Figures CantZano is in the middle of it!

I like the Bananarama version more, but probably because it's the one I've heard more. It's a great pop tune, IMO.

Bananarama! 7th grade memories right there!
