My daughter is a linguist, literally. I asked her about this and she said that while the word does not have racial origins, she would never use it. "It has racist overtones today," she said. That is not being "overly sensitive."

Apparently there are two schools of thought - it's sort of constitutional really. Originalists and transformative. Transformatives believe that word uses and meanings change over time and the word we were discussing would fall into that group. Originalists look at the root and case closed.

Most of us are transformatives. "Cool" for instance doesn't mean what it did in the 1700s. We don't speak in Olde English anymore. Language changes and evolves.

(That said, "literally" does mean literally, even if most bozos use it figuratively! Triggers! )

Simple shit got me again huh! Well Banning banned and ban, all the same to me. You see I have faults, a photo memory, it works in snaps shots. Not all snaps are perfect. I always needed help in sorting that detail out. Had a hell of time with the teacher like @riverman in my early years, but i managed to overcome the impediment.
It has it's benefits though, but enough of the nerdly stuff.
