On Rip City Mornings, Nigel says that Vancouver BC is not part of the "Pacific Northwest" because it's not part of the United States.

Hm, I never really thought about it.

I guess you could also ask if the "Desert SW" just Arizona/New Mexico, and not the neighboring part of Mexico.

I can kind of see his point. I'm not sure what my opinion is.

More pointless shit to argue about!

The local Indians get angry over this topic. It is not a pointless question to them.

The tribe had villages spread out over both Vancouver Island and the NW tip of WA.

They do not like their traditional lands being split between two countries, with two sets of rules. Many families were divided by the two countries.

I have no good explanation but I do consider Vancouver part of the Pacific NW while I don't consider any non-American portions to be part of the Desert SW. Logic would dictate both or neither but that's just not how I conceptualize the two areas.

the "pointless shit" comment was regarding my post in the 10 year thread. Imho, it's pointless because I think to most people, it's obvious that it's part of the PNW.

Grab the tomahawks, its skalping time. Leave the pointless ones with the women.

No. The Pacific Northwest has always been Oregon, Washington and Idaho. It is part of Cascadia though.

To americans it's NW...to Canadians it's SW...
Technically but I've never heard anyone refer to it as such in common parlance. Probably because the Southern part of BC is further North than the Southern part of Quebec and Ontario. We don't have a Midwest either we just call everything West of Ontario the West.

Vancouver is geographically SW Canada, population-wise NE Asia.

So that being the case there's no longer any doubt...Blazers are the True North!

umm, maybe not. Simon Fraser sort of made it come out that way.
I was a BC resident for some time, you need to learn your BC history for that deal.

It used to be part of the Oregon Territory.

This was decided by Ecotopia's motto, 44 40 or fight.

The Canadian Northwest is the Yukon, and does not border the Pacific Ocean. Therefore, the Canadian Northwest is not allowed into membership of the elite Pacific Northwest club. Any attempt to move it will be crushed with a force equal to a tectonic plate. Don't try it.

yeah...we call the Memphis Grizzlies and New Orleans Pelicans the western conference too...makes no geographic sense at all unless you're Daniel Boone and America has only 13 colonies

No because the "NW" is relative to our country. For them, it's the Pacific SW.

I love that I'm not sure if that's a typo of "Fifty-Four Forty or Fight!" or I super-missed a good joke.

Canadians in Vancouver, B.C. have long considered themselves to be part of the Pacific NorthWest. I have long considered them to be part of the Pacific NorthWest.

So wait, is Alaska part of the Pacific NW?

I'd say no, since it's not physically close to the area.
Did you know that a lot of their fishing vessels sail out of Seattle?

What about the pipeline, did you know about that? The caribou rub up against it and have babies.

That's why we're going to the UN to end brass feeding.
