Jalen Rose to Knicks?

"Jan. 14 - The Raptors and Heat have discussed a trade that would send Rose to Miami, but a report on TNT this week suggests the Knicks have interest in swapping Penny Hardaway to Toronto for Rose.

Both players earn in the neighborhood of $14.5 million, but Hardaway has one more year on his deal and Rose two. At the very least the trade would give Toronto cap relief a year sooner. However, Raptors GM Rob Babcock is said to be holding out for a deal that would bring an expiring contract and clear cap space this summer, not a year from now." ESPN.com

If this happaned it would be a great deal for the knicks. He would give us much more flexablity so that if Houston, Crawford or Starbury went out of the game he could fill in at any of their spots. He is a much better option at the backup PG, than Moochie Norris despite the fact that he is not youre prototype PG but remember neither is Marbury.

Jwohl - Next time, please post the link that corresponds with this article. I would edit your post with the link included, but I can't seem to find it.

In the past I've analyzed this trade, and how much of a cap hit this is. And I don't feel any differently today. Why trade away an over-paid player who doesn't like his team for an over-paid player who never was a team player but has 2 more years on contract? Sure, Rose has those games where he sinks every shot and is an electric scorer and offensive weapon, but the fact of the matter is that he is an 'average' defender (not excellent - which is what we need) and a bad team player.

There is no real upside to this trade for the Knicks, if Isiah does the deal it would solely be for headlines and so it'd be on the books that he made another trade. Why not go for a contructive trade? Like one for Artest, in future years. We don't have a strong defender on this team with the lone exception of Kurt Thomas. Nevermind an elite shut down defender like Artest. Artest can also score and when he has the hot hand he is flat out lethal. Why I keep hearing these Rose/Wally stuff I don't know - we should be reading about a trade regarding Artest for Mohhamed or someone of that status, while I don't pinpoint us trading Mohhamed - he would certainly stimulate interest in the mind of Larry Bird. I think Bird would bite at the chance to acquire Sweetney or Mohhamed, giving us an 'open look' at a guy like Artest.

This trade for Rose will have Knicks fans calling for Isiah's head, with another big contract obligation - locking us up financially for even longer, and putting even more pressure for Isiah to make another stupid, desperate trade.

Let's say we do acquire Rose, and Knicks fans hate him and Isiah at the start of next season, ok? Now what kind of position is Thomas in? A pretty damn bad one. He'd have to pull the trigger on a big move - and fast. Now next year is Tim Thomas' final year with the Knicks (Thank G-d) I believe the same goes for Mohhamed Moochie, and Baker I'm not sure though. So what if he takes a bad trade for such a valuable contract as Thomas? Thomas would prove to be a very nice piece to a team looking to clear space for the 06-07 season. And with a huge space contract like T. Thomas' they'd have a huge cash campaign to offer some big-time players or trade up for some draft picks with cash. Now we all realize the value of Tim's contract then, so why risk wasting it? If Isiah is under pressure if he pulls the Rose trade, he may feel obligated tos ship Tim out as soon as possible, which means we run a greater risk of a raw deal - which would make it even tougher on Isiah.

What's the logic?

i dunno. Rose contract runs till 2007-2008, while Penny's is till 2006-2007. I mean as a Knick fan you'd look at it and think "no way...we have to free up cap room to sign some good free agents." But that cant happen because even without Pennies contract the Knicks wont be free agent players until 2007-2008 anyways when Allan Houstons contract ends. So basically the cap argument is moot.

Then it becomes Rose vs. Penny. Rose can play more minutes, more positions, is a much more skilled player and isnt as injury prone. I'm not sure why Knicks wouldnt take this deal in a second.

Well about the cap, it's one more reason for Dolan not to buck up moeny for Sweetney, so don't disregard it.
You're right about everything in your conclusion, except Penny can play the 1, 2, and 3 - same goes for Rose. Other than that your Penny-Rose comparison is good.
I disagree about the contracts though.

I doubt the cap would stop Dolan from signing Sweetney. And anyways, i dont expect him to be that expensive a signing anyways. I mean he's doing well, and he's improved since last year. But unless he breaks it wont turn into a Kenyon Martin scenerio. To will be needing the contract room to sign Bosh to a BIG deal...so i'm a fan of any trade that gets rid of Rose.

That performance is persuading Isiah Thomas more to trade for Rose. I'm at a loss for words now.

I'm pretty sure that NY will re-sign Sweetney no matter what.

Bosh will be restricted, and using one of those early bird exceptions I believe you can re-sign any player that has been in the league with one team for at least 4 years. So we don't need cap room unless we try to sign some Free Agent.


New York really doesn't have much to lose in this trade, because they won't have cap room even after Penny's contract comes off, so why not have a player that can do something instead.

Rose demands the ball a lot, he and he also has a little attitude thing which would not be welcomed. I would rather get cap room now. Or make a trade now that will make us a better team. You can keep Rose.

Crawford demands the ball a lot, he has been known to not care about his shot selection. Hmmm, but you guys signed him didn't you?

Even when Jalen has this "attitude", he manages to put up some nice 4th quarters. If the most charismatic GM who has coached Jalen, and likes him, I don't see many problems.

!!! The Knicks cannot get cap room now! You have 90 + million dollars in salaries. Even in the next two years assuming you don't sign Sweetney you still won't have cap room. You cannot bring up the cap room issue. It doesn't apply to NY for the next few years. I hope you understand this.

Hardaway doesn't come off the cap this year. So he isn't even a very valuable commodity. I don't know who else you will expect to get for Hardaway, post a trade that you think would improve the Knicks and you believe is possible.

Exactly why Jalen Rose will be bad. We already have chuckers. So with Crawford, Marbury, and Rose taking 20 shots, how would that work. Probably not too well...unless they're making all of them which has less than a 1/1000000000 chance of happening.

That attitude can cause chemistry problems for the Knicks. Everyone who followed them last year, knows that was our biggest problem.

Of course we wont get over the salary cap this year! But, what prurpose would it do adding more and more and more money to it. What is the purpose of that? I don't want an old past his prime player getting payed that much. We already have that. Desperate teams that want salary space, would appreciate the many million Hardaway's contract will take off. Why not possibly steal a nice young player, or a pick or something. We can do that this summer. I'm not trying to wait around untill the following summer for Rose to get off.
