speed kills.....I was shocked when I visited my home town after the war how many guys I played sports with died in high speed crashes...hot rods and motorcycles..In Iowa you can build up some serious speed with no traffic for miles....long flat roads.....personally, I'm a Prius putter

It's sad, but when you put yourself at risk like that, there's always a chance it could go badly. I'm sure that's something she considered.

I definitely tested out the governor on a few cars when I was younger driving wide open 2-lane county roads in Iowa...

Very sad. I have witnessed some death and near death crashes mainly in drag boat racing in the 80's. My dad had been ivolved in racing many years and when he was in his 20's he owned a track roadster and during a race a car spun out and hit my dad in the infield completely shattering his leg. He was fortunate he lived and were even able to save his leg by inserting a titanium rod that was experimental at the time.

I have watched several shows on tv that Jesse Combs was in as i watch a lot of the car shows on Motor Trend tv. RIP

I never liked high speeds....all my friends did though
Yeah, it was rare for me to do that, but the temptation got the better of me on a few occasions. Had to pray no deer would pop out...so dumb thinking back on it....never letting my kids drive now..haha

I'm trying to see if i can figure out how this is, without clicking on the link. I have never heard of this person.

I thought it was going to be about that MTV VJ from the 90s.

Racers know the risks involved as I have been around many in my years of watching and my dad being involved in racing and I have heard many make the comment that if they died racing they were fine with that as they knew the risks but they also had the love and passion for the sport which made it worth the risk.

Did she break the record?

To me the sport is like walking on a high wire.....if you can get to the other side in one piece it's impressive

One of the most dangerous motor sports is drag boat racing. Here is a video of what these things are capable of. Hearing a blown fuel hydro fire up and take off is extremely exhilarating. I use to go to Red Bluff California to watch them race as well as going to the Nationals at Castaic Lake in southern California. I'm a speed junkie so I love watching pretty much all forms of racing.

I didn’t realize it was in Oregon. Bummer cuz she seemed like a cool chick.

I have had the MarAzul up to 17 knot on a broad reach. But normally I consider 8 knot quite a show.

I understand it was her passion. But she was trying to break her own world record. I don't see the point of it until someone had beaten her reord

Sponsors like records.

Well, actually it is the equipment that does the deed and hauls the ballast to the fame.

Fruit flies like a banana.

I once got my parent's 70s Olds Cutlass up to 125 MPH going down hill on a long straight stretch of road very late at night on Hwy 26 headed East. I was in my early 20s and very stupid.
Young people do a lot of stupid things.
I also challenged fate when on a surf fishing trip. I had one hand on my rod, another hand on my tackle box, wearing rubber hip boots while hopping from one slippery rock to another with a deadly pounding surf below. Had I fallen, there was no way to have been saved.
I also once got my boat dumped while steelhead fishing in the middle of winter while wearing chest waders. It was so cold that my rod tip was caked in ice and only the sliding of my line through the tip top guide kept the hole from icing shut. I grabbed a small life preserver lying in the bottom of the boat and it kept me barely from going under. As it was the freezing cold water came up to my lower lipe. After my buddy pulled me out I drank an entire thermos of very hot coffee. Had a headache that lasted for hours.
Kids aren't all that smart.

Well the more you know. I did some digging and my good friend Dennis, has actually worked with her a few times. Said she was great. RIP to her
