Hate to say this but he is in decline and pretty expensive at that. Thanks Cashman.
Cashman and the FO is to blame for all of this. Their approach to the obvious issues has been, on the surface, a total failure on all fronts. Every team has issues, not every team has a Arod distraction, unmovable contracts, a farm system 2 years away, and a team that uses their AARP cards for discounts.

I think the Red Sux have done a great job with their farm system. They bring them up play them keep them or trade for new younger talent. Elsbury, Nava, Middlebruck, Ross and so on the ones traded Lawrie, Ingeliese and so on but overall they have done excellent compared to the Yanks.
The Red Sox, The Rays, The As, The Braves, The Cards, The Reds. In otherv words winning teams right now have had good farms. They aren't relying on spending a fortune in free agency.
And combined those teams have 4 series wins in over 78 years combined. And the two sox wins were with a lot of brought players..Schilling. ..pedro...manny...damon..papi...all bought.

Al I don't think Mess was looking to reach back to 1935. Realistically I believe he was looking at perhaps the last 5-10 years. And I happen to agree with him. The Yankee scouts & farm system has basically been shit over the last few years.

The Cardinals themselves have 13 WS appearances and 8 WS wins in the 78 years so I'm not sure where you're getting these numbers from. Plus, all that really matter is this.
Boston: First place AL East
As: First place AL West
Atlanta: First place NL East
St Louis: First place NL Central
Boston truly amazes be. I mean they lost what 95 games last year? Only to be rebuilt. The Cardinals trade away there #1 star (now looking like a great move) and have added just the right pieces to contend. And Atlanta & the the A's just seem to be there at the top year after year.
I'm afraid after a nice 20 year run, when you now consider who's running things that the Yankees will not be competitive for quite a few years. Sadly.
It's why so many rightly bash Cashman. Even with all the injuries this team has incurred and the supposed budget restrictions, the simple fact is that Cashman STILL had over $30M to spend this off-season (pretty much more than 80%+ other teams had), and instead of using it on 5-6 players - he lazily gave Youkilis $12M, took on Wells for $12M, gave Ichiro $6M, and in the process ignored C, 3B, a RH bat (until he was overruled on Soriano, which looks like too late).
Cashman made no attempts to improve this team last off-season, spent his off-season chasing whores, lying to his wife, repelling buildings, breaking his ankle doing it - - he basically gave himself 3 month vacation while other GMs like the one in Boston did their jobs to improve their teams.
At this point I settle for Gene Michael getting his job back. Then see him replace Girardi with Laussa. Try & unload CCs contract even if it means eating 1/2 of it. Picking up McCann & Morales. And replace Granderson with Ellsbury. That's just for starters.
