Justin Walters made birdie on the last hole to take a one-shot lead after the first round of the European Tour's Joburg Open on Thursday.
The South African made his sixth birdie of the day on No. 18 for a 7-under 65 on the East Course at Royal Johannesburg and Kensington. That gave Walters a narrow advantage over six men tied for second on 6 under.
Joburg Open 2016: Ross McGowan leads at halfway mark
McGowan, 33, fired two eagles, six birdies and a bogey to finish 14 under, three shots ahead of countryman Anthony Wall, Felipe Aguilar of Chile, and home players Haydn Porteous and Jean Hugo.
McGowan won the Madrid Masters in 2009 but lost his European Tour card in 2011 before regaining it last November.
Anthony Wall has a chance at his second European Tour title and first in 16 years when he heads into the final round of the Joburg Open as part of a three-way tie for the lead.
England's Wall and South Africans Zander Lombard and Haydn Porteous were on 15-under-par 200 on Saturday after three rounds at Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club.
Wall, trying to add to his Alfred Dunhill Championship victory in 2000, had four birdies in a 68. Lomard had one of the rounds of the day with his 65, while Porteous matched Wall's 68.
Haydn Porteous claims maiden European Tour win at Joburg Open
South Africa's Haydn Porteous carded a final round 69 to win his maiden European Tour title at the Joburg Open.
Porteous became the second South African in as many weeks to open his account after Brandon Stone's triumph at the South African Open last Sunday.
The 21-year-old, who had gone into the fourth day on the East Course at the Royal Johannesburg & Kensington Golf Club tied with compatriot Zander Lombard and England's Anthony Wall on 15 under, completed a flawless round which included three birdies to finish two shots clear on 18 under.
