Fuck it.

This is what I heard from a very good source...

The meeting with Cronin, Dame and his agent Joe talked about multiple trades and deals they were working on. Some really big ones that would move the needle and make the Blazers contenders. But when Dame's agent called those teams and asked the teams about those proposals those teams had already turned the Blazers down.

Dame and his agent know deals get talked about and nothing ever happens but Dame and his agent got frustrated because Joe was talking about possible deals that he was working on that in fact were never going to happen.

Joe was likely trying to buy time. He shouldn't have told Dame these trades were possible if they were in fact dead. Maybe Joe was hoping to re-engage with these teams about said trades, but damn that's dishonest if true. Frankly, it's embarrassing. If the media gets a whiff of that...Jesus.

Clearly one of them was OG.

I could totally see Cronin just not being able to read people very well. People skills and negotiation don't seem to be his strong suit. Doesn't mean he is a liar. Could he be a liar? Sure, but sometimes management are told to do shit and they do it because if they don't, they could get fired.

Cronin seems like a hell of a nice guy and a people-pleaser. And the person he has to please the most doesn't have a real depth of knowledge of basketball. I'm sure Jody wants Dame and the draft picks. Best of both worlds. I'm not sure Joe is the type who can tell her that just isn't possible.

Joe is a Robin trying to be a Batman. Nothing wrong with being a Robin but a small market team needs a Batman with a side of the Joker.

Of course, those teams wouldn’t have any incentive to mislead……

Fine… I will take the job.

Who has handled this the right way so far?

I go with Joe all day long. His only comment since this trade stuff has basically been "Dame has notified that he wants out, we want Dame to be here and we are going to do what's best for the Portland Trailblazers"

Whether coach speak or not, it's sweet and simple. No mudslinging and to the point. Since them we have all of these leaks from Dames camp, whether directly from him or not that are trying to pit the world against the Blazers.

If this ends up happening and all parties end up happy, this will set a precedent. Joe could turn a big corner as a GM and this franchise can absolutely take a resounding step forward. Just think, it could all be due to Dame and not being a part of the team.

I don't know what the end result will be and will probably get shit from the board police but wanted a clean thread just on the topic in the subject line.
I can support neither party at this time, because no one has resorted to spilling the tea or airing the dirty laundry. All the dirt is needed to figure out what the over promises and failures were. As is, both parties are posturing as expected, and within reasonable norms.

We would find out if Fentress was on this forum if he finds that lol

Can also see other teams saying "no smoke" to agents to keep shit out of the rumor mill(public or agent).

What makes me laugh are people saying OMG, Joe is a liar, he hasn't been honest!

That's executives/management for you. Things change. Situations change. At the time something was said it could have been the path. Then something else happens (like winning the 3rd pick). You can't take less just to appease someone that honestly might have already given hints they wanted to leave.

Its hard to trust people too. Dame totally could have told someone he was thinking of leaving and they ran to someone in management to tell them.

It is a divorce. Shit happens. The team is going the right path toward having any chance of building an actual winner. Could they fail? Absolutely! But we have sucked for 4 years now.
In general, I've been thinking the opposite. He's been too honest with his intentions, and hasn't held his powder when it would have been more prudent.

The truth comes out! Sly has been one of Dames family this entire time!

That absolutely could be it too. Its different when you are lead dog. He is still learning the job. He probably prides himself on being honest and it bit him in the ass by sharing his intentions publicly to support Dame. The other gms were shark in the water smelling blood.

GMs don't jerk the big agents around. Lots of shit happens behind the scenes between agents and GMs. Grant's new contract for example, the Blazers couldn't go to Grant and promise him a new contract when they first traded for him but they can talk to his agent about one. Grant's deal was negotiated last season.

The majority of Woj bombs come from agents vs GMs.

This wouldn't surprise me.

I think they're both handling it as well as possible. I think Cronin would have made a trade to swing for the fences if he could have improved the team that way. But I don't think that opportunity was there.

That means this team likely is going to have to build with young players, which is not what Dame is interested in doing.

It's a shit situation for both sides of the relationship. They are both doing an admirable job, IMO.

Meaning Joe was trying to make something happen, but those deals weren't available.

This makes total sense. I don't think Joe wanted to lose Dame. I don't think Dame wanted to leave. But I don't think it was possible to do right by the team and compete the way Dame wanted to, considering what was available at the time.

Thanks for sharing.

Regardless, bad move going around your GM. If you want out, ask out. I you want to remain a Blazer...do it. But this whole, 'I want to be here if'...when you are going to make almost a half of a billion dollars from a franchise, deserves more respect than going around you to get info. Don't get me wrong, I love Dame. But this marriage has been moving towards a crash for a bit now. Several sets of hands have been driving or yanking on the steering wheel. That includes Mr. Lillard.

Clyde Drexler described his situation as "I looked around and they traded our center. We didn't have a center." That's when he asked for a trade.

“They got rid of Kevin Duckworth, and I was like ‘Hold up guys, we don't have a center,'” he said. “And then they started saying, ‘We need to rebuild. We need to trade some of these veterans while they can still play so that we can get something for them.' And that's when I orchestrated the trade to Houston. But if they had not done that, I would have finished my career there.”

Cronin didn't trade the center. He didn't trade the power forward. He didn't trade the shooting guard. The only starter he traded was Josh Hart, who became a bench player for New York and might not have stayed in Portland.

And watch Dame rep whoever his new team is in the HoF. People will say it was the organization for Dame but villainize Clyde and say it was his fault.
