1. He has enough equity built up that this won't tarnish his rep.And I'll reiterate my question: Why? Why would Dame behave this way when there was a clear public "high road" path? They can snipe behind the scenes, but both sides were incentivized to cooperate. I am stymied as to why Dame chose to burn his hard-earned reputation.
I absolutely cannot figure it out, and it is the part of this episode that is most vexing. It's SO out of character. If he were some cocky a**hole all these years, Portland is a small enough town that his rep would leak. But by all accounts, he has been the opposite. Not perfect, but a really good guy.I am gobsmacked and cannot give the answer to 'why' he has taken this path. It is out of character given his previous stellar conduct in the public arena.
Cronin could very well have had his deals turned down and still think they would happen as draft day came and teams became more ready to deal.. I don't think he was being dishonest.Fuck it.
This is what I heard from a very good source...
The meeting with Cronin, Dame and his agent Joe talked about multiple trades and deals they were working on. Some really big ones that would move the needle and make the Blazers contenders. But when Dame's agent called those teams and asked the teams about those proposals those teams had already turned the Blazers down.
Dame and his agent know deals get talked about and nothing ever happens but Dame and his agent got frustrated because Joe was talking about possible deals that he was working on that in fact were never going to happen.
Again I don't see how this is dishonest on Cronin's part. I'm assuming he DID think those trades were still possible. I'm assuming he did continue to re-engage with those teams right up until the moment came for us to make our pick. I guess he was wrong about there being a possibility the trades would happen but I don't think that is being dishonest.Joe was likely trying to buy time. He shouldn't have told Dame these trades were possible if they were in fact dead. Maybe Joe was hoping to re-engage with these teams about said trades, but damn that's dishonest if true. Frankly, it's embarrassing. If the media gets a whiff of that...Jesus.
LeBron did NOT do this. He has always honored his contracts.1. He has enough equity built up that this won't tarnish his rep.
2. He feels like he was lied to. Cronin really did do nothing to build a viable roster and seems like a terrible negotiator. The other thought here is that Joe wanted a full rebuild but didn't have the guts to pull the plug himself.
3. All the stars do this to some extent. Lebron, KD, AD, PG, CP3, etc etc etc, so it doesn't matter.
4. We drafted his replacement.
Great point. Was thinking Harden. Typed LeBron.LeBron did NOT do this. He has always honored his contracts.
If you can't back up your opinions, you're going to get hammered on one of the more knowledgeable message boards out there. If you think being told you're wrong is a personal insult, that's kind of up to you. You can survive one of vehement, wrong and public.I've noticed a couple things since the Lillard trade request. First, the barricade holding back Blazer fans that just want to fight and argue has been weaponized. This isn't basketball right now, it's getting dirty, it's getting personal. Blazer fans that simply compliment Lillard for having a great career in Portland are walking on eggshells. Best advice is to hide in the cellar until the angry hoard passes by.
Another thing I see is franchise embarrassment. The Blazers only superstar has basically said management in Portland stinks, I can't take it no more, please get me the hell out of here. OUCH. Naturally the Blazers self defense button gets turned on, and the Blazers are trying to flip the narrative by saying EVERYTHING wrong in Portland is Lillard's fault. Which feeds the before mentioned rampaging battalion that go into chat rooms armed with nothing but personal insults towards Damian or anyone else who dares speak up.
2. Ad infinitum...what was the horrible negotiation Cronin did? Hold Sharpe plus Scoot as "untouchable?" I don't know how horrible that it. He got out of Powell and RoCo a year early (Belichick-style)--their value is horrible right now. He got a first back for CJ when they couldn't even get sitting-out Ben Simmons for him. That said, if he feels like he was lied to, then that's real. Maybe Goodwin could've told him some agent things about how things were going down, but pretty obviously didn't.1. 4. If Scoot was good enough to replace him in the next two years or so, then there's a "win-now" move. Should be a positive. If he's a "rebuilding team candidate that will take 3-4 years to mature", then sure, we're drafting Aaron Rodgers to sit behind Favre (or Love to sit behind Rodgers). That may not make the team better today, but that's not threatening Dame. I feel like one can only argue one side of that...
Dame is probably pissed that he has to leave and that the Blazers screwed him out of competing here.
Yeah in general, I don't blame him for wanting a better chance to get a ring, but at the same time, I wish he had went about it a bit different. Blazer legend sure, but sooner he is gone, the better for the team, take that for what you want.Dame is probably pissed that he has to leave and that the Blazers screwed him out of competing here.
Dame gave Portland plenty of chances. For years. I think he'll regret this decision, but I don't blame him for making it.
I think it's pretty likely he is even pissed at his agent (who has probably been pushing him to leave Portland), and he's telling him that he wants out, and he wants to go to Miami. Make it happen. I seriously doubt Dame is pulling the individual strings.Yeah in general, I don't blame him for wanting a better chance to get a ring, but at the same time, I wish he had went about it a bit different. I never had a day where I was insulted more randomly than yesterday (on Twitter, this place is better believe it or not). So many random people who came out of the woodworks, I heard it all. Grown men throwing insults at anyone who didn't have praise for Cronin and then would play the victim when they got blocked. It's absurd.I've noticed a couple things since the Lillard trade request. Yup. I'm tired of people trying to proclaim what other people are fans of and aren't fans of, and it's always missing context. We have hundreds to thousands of posts on a fucking forum, of course we're all Blazer fans. This take lacks nuance, you can still be a fan of Dame and a bigger fan of the team. You can obviously dislike the way that Joe handled things with Dame and still be a huge fan of the team. You can even understand Dame wanting to fuck Joe over and still be a huge fan of the team. This shit isn't binary.
It's buried in another thread, but I pointed out that the way to build winners Dame-style ("get me good vets") is to stockpile 3 things--space to take on bad contracts as riders, draft picks, and young players, preferably with a lotto pedigree. Dame already showed that (for instance) RoCo and Powell weren't going to get him there. (Even after the 2 1sts for RoCo and more 1sts for Nance Jr.) So Dame was already influencing (overtly or not) the FO giving up those things you need for stars while going after not-stars. Now that Cronin's here, he got rid of large contracts, took chances on young players, and traded for draft picks. He then was able to get Dame's Olympic buddy Grant. This year, just didn't have enough picks and young talent for that.I never had a day where I was insulted more randomly than yesterday (on Twitter, this place is better believe it or not). So many random people who came out of the woodworks, I heard it all. Grown men throwing insults at anyone who didn't have praise for Cronin and then would play the victim when they got blocked. Most of my YouTube community seems to differ in opinion from a lot of the stuff I see online, so at least I have a safe place haha. It's comical that the FO is trying to flip it after saying they were obligated to build a winner around Dame and then did nothing of the sort.
There have been plenty of ideas on how to handle being a better Blazer. Off the top of my head: 1) don't take dirty laundry public. 2) don't hamstring your team with a one-location trade request before you've gotten a paycheck on your shiny new supermax extension.I don't see any player handling being a Blazer better than Dame so if we're turning on him, why should we ever embrace anyone since they'll be held to a bar no one will reach?
If anything was happening that Dame didn't agree with, he would 100% speak up.
When Henry Abbott was putting it out there a couple years ago that Dame wanted out, he spoke up and refuted it.

I think this is a much different situation. Dame doesn't want to leave Portland and end up in Utah. Him speaking up could really impact these negotiations...If anything was happening that Dame didn't agree with, he would 100% speak up.

So fire the agent.I think it's pretty likely he is even pissed at his agent (who has probably been pushing him to leave Portland), and he's telling him that he wants out, and he wants to go to Miami. Make it happen. I seriously doubt Dame is pulling the individual strings.
His agent is trying to make it happen for his client, and I doubt he cares what happens to Dame's legacy.
From his agent's perspective, he needs to make it tough on Portland to keep Dame. Because the longer Portland holds out the more likely they are to get a better offer from another team. And that might get a certain agent's ass fired.
I think this all happens. dame will go to Miami and we will get a decent return via third party inclusion.
It may come to that. Now would be the wrong time to do that.So fire the agent.
No. 4 is a terrific point. We have paradoxical narratives that Dame wanted to win now but Dame also felt slighted because he thought the Blazers, by drafting the guy considered a potential transcendent player in a draft with three guys like that, was simultaneously too young to help Dame accomplish that while also being so advanced that he was going to push out the door almost immediately.
Pretzel logic.
I think this is a much different situation. Dame doesn't want to leave Portland and end up in Utah. Him speaking up could really impact these negotiations...
Then he should bring some receipts, or tell his agent to act as professionally as he is. I get wanting to stay clean, but Goodwin is tracking mud on his nice new mansion floors.Dame is probably pissed that he has to leave and that the Blazers screwed him out of competing here.
