Don't be surprised if the Blazers deal Matthews at mid-season, which would allow them to take another spin on the free-agent wheel in 2013. This is particularly true if the young guards play well. Remember, soon the clock will start ticking on Aldridge and his 2015 free agency, and this program will have to show results.

In the meantime, look for league-average offense thanks to Aldridge and Stotts' playbook, subpar defense, and another trip to the lottery.

Move Nic to SG?

Re: John Hollinger says Wes Mathews will the traded by the feb. 23rd trading deadline

link? I didn't see a tweet or on NBA ESPN page. Thanks!

Re: John Hollinger says Wes Mathews will the traded by the feb. 23rd trading deadline

Why deal Mathews? He plays great D, shoots the ball well, can finish on the break, and plays the right way. He's still young. Do we need a better SG than that if we're building around Nic and Lillard (and Aldridge if he's still around)?

Huh? What young "guards"? I only count one. Does Hollinger watch the Blazers?

Yeah I was thinking the same damn thing. Sometimes I think these writers just pull shit from their ass.

we have 13M to spend right now on the FA wheel. Assuming Stern wasn't talking out of his anus when he said revenues this year might reach 5B, the cap could go up significantly and therefore increase substantially the amount of space we have.

This makes it sound like were looking to trade Mathews which I have very serious doubts about. If were thinking of LMA FA year then you definitely dont trade Mathews unless the return is a bonafied star.

probably meant nolan and barton as well as Lillard. This was an article from October 24th. Odd to start a thread on it now.

Re: John Hollinger says Wes Mathews will the traded by the feb. 23rd trading deadline

But looking at Matthews, IN OUR SITUATION, meaning fit, stage of rebuild, etc., how many SGs are there currently in the league that are improvements for us?

didn't this thread already take place a while ago? I swear I remember reading some of these comments already (and I'm not saying that to be an ass..I swear I read these before)

Perhaps your mind is playing tricks on you?

I'm not sure my mind is smart enough to trick itself.

Boston is talking to PHX for Gortat and have Bradley in their potential offer.

I'd try to get in on that and land Bradley. His defense in the backcourt with Lillard would be great, and much needed.

This is also a move to clear cap this summer. Wes is playing great -- showcase Wessy Wes in full effect.

Re: John Hollinger says Wes Mathews will the traded by the feb. 23rd trading deadline

Matthews has been good in the years he's been healthy. I would hold onto him as he embodies what we want from most players: hard working, sacrifices, personable, good shooter, good defender, DURABLE, and plays with fire. He may not be ideal, but he fills a need and we likely wouldn't get equal value for him.

Re: John Hollinger says Wes Mathews will the traded by the feb. 23rd trading deadline

Who do we need all this cap space for? Given our situation, Wes is perfect.

Re: John Hollinger says Wes Mathews will the traded by the feb. 23rd trading deadline

That idea is stupid on so many levels!

A) The Blazers could already make enough room to go after a top FA this year
B) There are not any realistic options worth the max thi syear
C) A trade to "clear space" means we'd be making a lop sided trade, basically trading Matthews for nothing. Why would we get rid of our solid starting SG with his very reasonable contract?

Re: John Hollinger says Wes Mathews will the traded by the feb. 23rd trading deadline

An obsolete month-old article. We almost lost Hickson by gambling for Hibbert. Now we will dump Matthews for another summer pipe dream?

Re: John Hollinger says Wes Mathews will the traded by the feb. 23rd trading deadline

Trading Wes makes no sense right now... not unless the deal really knocks our socks off.

Re: John Hollinger says Wes Mathews will the traded by the feb. 23rd trading deadline

Isn't Wes young (like 25)? Cheap contract? Tough as nails? Still getting better? Works hard? A leader in a lot of ways? A solid SG (though, admittedly, not a big standout)?

Unless we get something that will people say, "Wow, that team gave up a lot to acquire Matthews," dealing Wes makes no sense for Portland.

Re: John Hollinger says Wes Mathews will the traded by the feb. 23rd trading deadline

What the hell I'll just throw Tyreke Evans playing along side Damian Lillard out there?

That Blazersedge link was from Oct 24th.

Not for sure we could do better with cap space over what Wesley brings.

Old News! Didn't make sense then and doesn't now! How is this rookie who's gone rogue on my forum continued to post here! Denny?

Re: John Hollinger says Wes Mathews will the traded by the feb. 23rd trading deadline

Would he have made this prediction if he knew Damian would be putting up 20/6 with a 20 PER 12 games into the season?

Hollinger does not watch basketball. He reads stat sheets and makes projections based on what he sees in print.

We have 2 guards worth keeping/playing. Wes and Lillard.

Yes. And I say we keep them.

Re: John Hollinger says Wes Mathews will the traded by the feb. 23rd trading deadline

I am so happy right now with where the Blazers are. Top six should not be touched unless there is an obvious upgrade. Lillard, Wes, Batum, Aldridge, Hickson and Aldridge are all hard working fun to watch players with talent. Enough trying to trade these guys. We are young and not going to be good this year, but we are fun to watch and well set up for the future as DL and ML mature, we have cap space in the offseason, and might end up with a draft pick. After next offseason, if the Blazers don't look right, then trades would be better to look at
