He's not better. He can't even hit the goddamn rim.

I have never seen an NBA player this bad. Statistically, there has never been anyone even close to his level. (Except one - Ben Wallace. If Josh can start playing defense like vintage Ben Wallace, maybe it'll turn out OK after all.)

If he keeps going like this (and I see no indication that he won't), he can't continue to play. It's just too detrimental to have him on the court.

Right now I consider this the same as a potentially career threatening injury or illness - because it is career threatening.

This is a sad situation and it will be a real shame if he can't turn it around.

Has there ever been a player who airballed free throws in two straight games?
 
Seems to be something mental. his delivery isnt too bad except he doesnt bend his knees. i would have him in the gym shooting 2000 ft's after that. i would tell him he is a detriment to the team with that crap.

and he has to go up and dunk when he is under the rim. he has blown at least 10 bunnies this season by not dunking! boone needs tough love.
 
His free throw shooting is so awful, I don't think anybody could mimic his style if they tried.

If he at least looked capable at the line, I'd echo your sentiments 100%. Maybe he's just in a funk.

But almost none of his shots look like they're going in. And to fail to even hit the rim in back-to-back games is unfathomable. Like I've said before, most people would have to try to miss the rim.
 
Also, him not making darn free throws possesses huge threat to his overall level of confidence. Anybody seen the look o his face when he was sent to the free throw line second time against the Heat and the crowd started to cheer? He was so helpless.

Come on, Boone, if Shaq learned how to shoot %50 you can do it also. First step is to try to hit the rim! :)
 
The guy was a psychology major and admits to having confidence issues. That tells you all you need to know. It's in his head -- not in his technique or anywhere else. That means it will be much, much harder for him to correct long term, and he is unlikely to ever be a clutch free throw shooter. All the more reason that he should not be playing the last 5 minutes of the game when Lopez is available.
 
He hit around 60% over the last three months of last season.

I don't know why he has regressed.
 
I think it's a lethal combination of lack of confidence and a complete lack of motor skills. And he's got those T-rex arms that look so weak. Has he seen the weight room yet? He's got no muscle definition 3 years into the league now.

He can no longer get minutes in the 4th quarter if they have a lead. This will get around the league quick and teams are going to hack him. Fortunately for him, they probably won't have too many 4th quarter leads, ha-ha.
 
If I were the opposing coach, I would hack him any time he was on the court and not stop until he was on the bench.

It's not hard to beat a team that scores one point every two possessions.

I think he already has done this regularly at different points throughout his career.

IIRC, the Nets brought in a special FT coach to work with him. I wouldn't be surprised if they have had psychologists talk to him (and if they haven't, what the hell are they waiting for?!).

This is bad. Golfers get the yips. Baseball players like Mackey Sasser (catcher who couldn't throw back to the pitcher) and Steve Sax and Chuck Knoblauch (couldn't throw from second to first) had mental blocks that they couldn't overcome no matter how much they practiced.

There is no way he stays at 27%, he will raise it to around 50, which is still pretty bad but w/e.
 
Its mental!

Over the summer he even developed a mid range jump shot that looks sweet, He hit a big shot right by the foul line a few games back. But when he has to walk up to the line with nobody on him and he has time to think of it even for a second he folds. Its like he has trouble focusing, or can't stand it when all eyes are on him like at a foul shot. Its like he's not had success with foul shooting, and his brain won't let him forget it, even though his mechanics are just fine, and has a smooth release. His back spin is proper, his arch is fine, it appears its all in his head....

Seems a little high to me; he only shot 46% last season. He'll probably be in the 40's, IMO.

Vandeweghe worked with Josh Boone on his free throws. Boone, who is shooting .267 from the line, is 1-of-8 in his last two games. It's all upstairs. "It's not really the mechanics, it's just trust. I'm thinking a little too much about it during games," said Boone, who shoots 80 percent in practice. "Mechanically, from what I can feel and what I've been told, there's nothing wrong. It's mental."
