In other first-round matches at the clay-court event, No. 6 seed Tommy Robredo of Spain rallied to beat Italy's Fabio Fognini 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-3 and seventh-seeded Potito Starace of Italy overcame Uruguay's Pablo Cuevas 6-4, 5-7, 6-4.
Also, Carlos Berlocq of Argentina downed Andre Ghem of Brazil 6-4, 6-3; Rui Machado of Portugal beat Argentina's Facundo Bagnis 6-4, 6-2; Lukasz Kubot of Poland advanced against Eduardo Schwank of Argentina 6-7 (5), 7-5, 7-6 (2); and Brazil's Ricardo Mello cruised past Santiago Giraldo of Colombia 6-4, 6-3.
