DNC co-chair, Minnesota Rep. Keith Ellison denies abuse allegations from ex-girlfriend

Rep. Keith Ellison has been accused of emotional and physical abuse by a former girlfriend. He said it never happened.

The co-chair of the Democratic National Committee, Rep. Keith Ellison, was accused of emotional and physical abuse by an ex-girlfriend who said: "You know you did that to me."

Ellison responded to the allegations Sunday, issuing a brief statement that said, "I never behaved in this way."

The allegations surfaced Saturday night from Karen Monahan after her son alleged in a Facebook post that he had seen text messages from Ellison threatening her and video of the congressman screaming obscenities at her as he dragged her off a bed by her feet, The Associated Press reported.

"My brother and I watched out mom come out of pure hell after getting out of her relationship with Keith Ellison," 25-year-old Austin Monahan said.

On Sunday, Karen Monahan said that what her son posted was the truth.

"Every statement he made was true. @keithellison, you know you did that to me," she tweeted.

Karen Monahan did not respond to a request from The Associated Press asking for copies of the video or text messages.

"Karen and I were in a long-term relationship which ended in 2016, and I still care deeply for her well-being," Ellison said. "This video does not exist because I never behaved in this way, and any characterization otherwise is false."

The allegations come days before Democratic voters choose between Ellison and other candidates in a Tuesday primary for attorney general.

Ellison posted photos to his Twitter account showing him posing with Monahan.

Earlier on Sunday, Ellison’s rivals in the race for attorney general demanded that he respond to the allegations, WCCO-TV reported.

Matt Pelikan and former Minnesota House Speaker Debra Hilstrom called the allegations troubling, the station reported.

Another candidate in the race, former Ramsey County Attorney Tom Foley, said the allegations were serious, according to the station.

“If there are records and video of his interaction with the victim, those materials also should be turned over to law enforcement for immediate investigation,” he said.

The station reported reaching out to Austin Monahan and left a message on the cell phone believed to be his that was not returned.

Hilstrom said in a tweet that Austin Monahan tagged her with his post. She then shared it with her followers.

Sort of like Rob Porter only Ellison wasn't vetted to work in the White House.

Hey Marris, you are quick to point out when any Dem gets in trouble for anything but where is your outrage at the party you vocally support that is RAMPANT with sexual/abusive/corrupt and you just turn a blind eye making pretend that it didn't happen.

Ellison was vetted to lead the DNC!

Remind us all what important position Rob Porter held?

I don’t support ANY party.

I support a variety of policies and programs.

I am fiscally conservative, socialy liberal and Constitutionally absolute.

And I do my best to live by The Golden Rule.

How can a person be socially Liberal and yet support Mr. Potato Head, aka the Moron, aka the Idiot?

Lanny, look at his signature file.
Lanny, look at his signature file.
It does not explain the strange behavior, especially when he so vehemently defends those positions.

Assuming you and Sly are correct, why doesn't he at least occasionally issue a caveat telling people he's not serious? I mean that's just strange.

Socially liberal....

Yeah.. The fuck right...
At least three people of note in here say he's putting on a show. I just wonder why he doesn't acknowledge it occasionally for the sake of those of us who take people at their word.

I'll give him this, he claims to be fiscally Conservative and socially Liberal and that fits me as well.

My exception is that sometimes you have to spend in order to improve in the first place. After all, money represents effort and products. This means "There ain't no such thing as a free lunch."

Keith Ellison accused by former girlfriend of emotional, physical abuse: What to know

Are Democrats ignoring Keith Ellison's accuser?
While senators grapple over what to do with the sexual assault accusation levied against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, a Minnesota political activist is continuing to allege Rep. Keith Ellison, D-Minn., was physically and emotionally abusive when they dated.

Karen Monahan, a Sierra Club activist, accused Ellison of abuse in August after her son publicly posted the allegations on social media. She said Ellison dragged her off a bed while shouting profanities at her and sent multiple abusive text messages.

“You know you did that to me,” Monahan said.

What are the allegations?
Monahan’s son, Austin, posted a lengthy Facebook status on Aug. 11 about messages Ellison allegedly sent her that were angry, threatening and shaming. He also said he saw a video of Ellison allegedly dragging his mother off a bed by her feet, “screaming and calling her a f****** b****’ and telling her to get the f*** out of his house.”

“There is a lot more he has done to my mom and others that we saw in the text but our mom can decide if and when she wants to tell the world that part,” Austin Monahan said.

On Aug. 12, Monahan said her son’s allegations were “true” in a tweet.

What my son said is true. Every statement he made was true.@keithellison, you know you did that to me. I have given every opportunity to get help and heal. Even now, u r willing to say my son is lying and have me continue to leak more text and info just so others will believe him

— Karen Monahan (@KarenMonahan01) August 12, 2018
“You know you did that to me,” Monahan said.

She has published on Twitter what she said are screenshots of text messages between her and Ellison, but none of them explicitly detail physical violence. But she’s rejected requests to release the purported video because she said it would be too “humiliating.”

She did, however, release what appears to be a medical document from 2017 that detailed abuse allegedly caused by Ellison.

— Karen Monahan (@KarenMonahan01) September 19, 2018
The document, written by a doctor, notes that Monahan informed them “she was in a very stressful environment for years, emotional and physical abuse by a partner with whom she is now separated.”

“She identifies the individual she was involved with as congressman Ellison [sic], and she is worried about retribution if she identifies him publicly,” the document said. “She feels that she is in a safe environment now and she is following up with therapy and relaxation. She has had reduced anxiety with extracting herself from the relationship and she feels much healthier now.”

Monahan has also accused Democrats of having “smeared, threatened, isolated” her from her own party.

“Four people, including my supervisor at the time, stated that I came to them after and shared the exact story I shared publicly,” she has said. “I shared multiple texts between me and Keith, where I discuss the abuse with him and much more. As I said before, I knew I wouldn't be believed.”

I expected everything that has taken place, before I decided to break my silence. I even stated it in my original statement. I showed up for myself & that was a huge piece of my healing

— Karen Monahan (@KarenMonahan01) September 17, 2018
How has Ellison responded?
“Karen and I were in a long-term relationship which ended in 2016, and I still care for her well-being. This video does not exist because I never behaved in this way, and any characterization otherwise is false,” Ellison said in a statement released by his campaign in August.

What has happened since the allegations surfaced?
Just days after Monahan’s allegations came to light, Ellison won the Democratic primary for Minnesota’s attorney general.

The Democratic National Committee had said it would review the allegations as well. The Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party has also opened an investigation.

Ellison is the deputy DNC chairman.

He was only the White House staff secretary to Donald Trump which means he was involved in some pretty important stuff.

And why the fuck don't you ever answer anyones questions when you post bullshit and you are asked to substantiate it with some proof other than some flawed link by Faux News.

Because it's an act. the sooner you realize it, the sooner you accept that he means nothing he says, and nothing he says holds any merit.

Julius, If you think Maris is an "act" you don't have a clue of what you're talking about. The Democrat is black so of course he's going to use bait words to attribute him to the racist stereotypes that are really the traits of the racists.

No, you misunderstood my point. He's over-embellishing his behavior because he knows it's grating to people. Not saying it's not how people act, but that he's a caricature of it.

Yeah, I disagree completely.

He's acting out yes.

But I don't believe it's an act.

I can show you an awful lot of Republicans who have done worse.

I hear you man. Its hard for me to believe too. He's gone on so long with it, used his "character" as a mechanism to say terrible things. I don't understand how amusement can be achieved by use of such inflamatory hateful things?

@MARIS61 Do you like to watch people get upset? Do you find some delight in rousing up consternation to the point of outrage? Do you revel in the dismay of others? Throw out a deluge of hateful declarations like a bear trap and wait for victims? Are you a serial killer? Would you tell me if you were?

Glad to be of service. Porter had access to all of the Presidents important papers as well as the President. I'm pretty sure Ellison did not have access to ANY of that.

You're welcome.

It's a deeply embedded caricature. It's gone on so long that he now identifies with it.

I don't think any one party has a monopoly on being asshats to women.
No, but Republicans are blazing the trail. Now, they want to stamp out abortion and even birth control. In addition, they oppose women's rights in the work place. Who opposed bills on allowing women the right to time off after they've given birth? And what about not hiring women because they are of child bearing age?

Look at Magnifier, or Jlprk, barfo or el presidente. they put on acts too.

you notice tho, he never denies what Ive said...(ping)
