Apparently he has studied the inner city schools extensively and compiled a list of things they
all need to do to become effective. As effective as the "White" schools. He says it is not the teachers fault things are not going well, but they need to be trained, trained like Navy Seals, special. And he says the schools can do it, you don't have to expect changes in the child's home.

Then I read this article, the schools in American are the best in the world!!! If you subtract out the inner city schools.

I did not get any info from Shyamalan, or the article as to why vast difference exists.
Anyone got any idea what is causing this difference?

I was lucky enough to have my grandson who is now 7 1/2 live with me until he was 6 years old. I read to him every evening until he would also read to me. We did this from the time he was 2 until he moved to Eugene with his parents. He went to Kinder school here and 1st grade in Eugene. He was reading quite well when he started 1st grade. I didn't want to leave that base work to chance.

Do you and your drinking buddy, the school night watchman, ever talk Blazers?

I expect you were in mind when this advice was coined.

"Do not argue with an idiot.
He will drag you down to his level
and beat you with experience."

That must be why he hasn't released a shitty movie lately. Busy doing other things. Good.

Glad to see you took my senior advice about "propose" not being spelled like "purpose." I have some more tips I'll let you in on when no one's around. Don't want to embarrass you.

WordWeb lists propose as a synonym of Purpose and purpose as a synonym of propose.
However, this site say Propose is often misused for purpose.

But in any case I think you have proven to be a simple pedantic, substituting an undue focus in place of the inability to follow the main theme.

She may enjoy the movie Cube, the sequel, and the prequel if she hasn't seen them already.

Getting back to the thread subject, inner-city schools have only inner-city kids, and inner-city kids all either have no parents, shitty parents, or 1 completely overwhelmed parent. Most inner-city kids of school age are already in a criminal gang or trying very hard to get in one. They've already given up on being upstanding citizens due to a pre-school life around nothing but negative losers who blame the white race for everything wrong in their lives. They've already been told they have no chance but to lie, cheat and steal.

When I was in school all I wanted to do was learn everything about everything. What I couldn't find out about in school I would scour the public library until I did find it.

If a kid has little to no interest in learning, no teacher on earth can make him absorb knowledge. And if a kid has no interest in learning, you've got to put the blame on the parents.

The reason Jamal can't read is not because Jamal's great great grandfather was a slave, it's because Jamal's biological father deserted him as an infant and Jamal's biological mother has 7 other kids by 5 other absentee fathers.

Wow! Someone might call that Racist! There must be someone that can refute your assertions
with logic or even a creditable theory instead of retorting a label. It will be interesting to see.

Not sure who this dude is?
Studies have shown that poor children are already at a disadvantage in Kindergarten. And before. Their mothers were less likely to get good prenatal care, they are more likely to be low birth weight. They are less likely to have good nutrition, and dental care. They are less likely to have a place for physical activity and play. They are less likely to have preschool. They are less likely to have parents who read to them, take them to children's museums, enroll them in educational programs in summer. If a neighborhood is unsafe for kids to play, if a parent is working 3 minimum wage jobs or has no job at all and the kid can't get healthcare, if a child goes to school hungry, he/she is not learning. If a school is deteriorating, the books out of date, classrooms overcrowded, no art, music, physical education, outdated computers or none at all, the child will not do as well as those in the fancy private schools the education "reformers" attended. If teachers keep leaving to get to "better schools" so the children are constantly taught by the least experienced teachers they won't learn. Basic sense.

Congratulations. Somehow you found a site that says there's a verb called "to purpose." So if a purple porpoise swims with purpose to his fiancé, he purposes to propose.

As for not having heard of this Night Watchman guy, I still haven't because the initial link looks uninteresting so I skipped it.

You make it sound like Father is missing. I agree, perhaps the trend should be reversed.
But it isn't "Poor" children, it is specifically "Inner City" children.
Well this guy says the schools can do it anyway if they are taught to succeed.

I have not read the book, I have only heard hims speak on the subject and I find nothing he said where I would disagree. But I am a bit skeptical of, "no change in the child's environment is required". Seems like the other parent need to be doing his part to raise the child.

According to child trends data:
In 2012, fertility rates were highest for Hispanic women (74 per thousand), followed by rates for black (65 per thousand), Asian (62 per thousand), white (59 per thousand), and American Indian women (47 per thousand). Between 2010 and 2012, rates fell for all of these groups except for whites and Asians, but declines were greatest among Hispanics.Among teens (ages 15-19), declines were seen in all groups, and for Hispanic teens the birth rate reached an historic low.

Not sure where Maris gets his "7 children by 5 fathers" racist screed. Probably the same fact free place most racist screeds come from.

Well one thing is certain, labeling Maris Racist has zero effect on why the vast difference exists between the inner city schools and the rest, even the predominately Hispanic areas outside the inner cities.

This Shyamalan may have a way to overcome the cause, but it sure seems to me like the cause should be understood and possibly corrected for the long term.

These articles suggest you maybe on target.

It seems to me that the Bully Pulpit given to the First Black President could have been used to improve the lives of inner City kids. The teaching moment was ripe and hanging low. He punted, He threw no pass, nor ran with the ball, he punted on first down and headed to Air-force One and the next golf course on his list. ObamaCare won't fix the problem or even part of it. More likely it is further enabling.
