Are they the team that effectively manhandled the Spurs, or are they the team that escaped almost certain disgrace at the hands of the Timberwolves? Or, are they somewhere in between?

How can they play so crisp and confident at times, yet, at other times, lax and mediocre...or without a seeming sense of urgency? Or, is this just the way of the NBA at large?

Not sure. Perhaps, though, that old adage is correct. Good to very good teams will win at least 80% of their home games and at least 50% of their road games. The low end of that equates to 53 wins (.650), BTW.)

If the above is true, then I suppose I shouldn't get so high and/or low after each game....take it all in stride, keep and eye on that "last 10 games" figure, then rest in the knowledege that, if the Blazers are winning 6-of-10 or 7-of-10, all will be OK in the end. The good, bad, and ugly all comes out in the proverbial wash.

Correct?

Sure, I'd love to see the Blazers come out firing on all cylinders each and every game. However, I know that's not realistic thinking. When I see brow-wipers such as last night's narrow escape, I must keep reminding myself that, if this truly is a successful team, then, basically speaking, for every 6.5 close wins, there will be 3.5 close losses. For every 6.5 blowout wins, there will be 3.5 blowout losses....or so on and such.

That said, the Blazers are definitely headed in the direction which I had hoped for at the beginning of the season. In fact, I'd say they're eclipsing those expectations. They're hovering around 63%. That equates to nearly 52 wins. At the beginning of the season, I penned them in for around 50 wins. At the time, I thought that was a fairly optimistic prediction. So, there ya go.

So, then, who are these Blazers?

In my mind, I'd say they're not quite in the ranks of the Lakers or (declining) Spurs. However, they're suddenly smack dab in the pack with the Hornets, Nuggets, Rockets, Jazz, and Mavericks. Much better company than they were in at the conclusion of last season. And, that's OK with me.

The Spurs game was a teaser. They played fantastic on both ends of the court. By and large, that's not what we see night in/out with this young team. I think we can all admit that our team defense is below average. Teams shoot 46.51% against Portland (the only teams that give up a higher FG % are GS, NY, SAC, MINN, OKL CITY, LAC, WASH, & MEM - prety much the worst teams in the league) That, and the fact that most nights we are a jump shooing team, allows inferior teams to hang around against us . . . at home we usually find a way to win (or Brandon does it by himself) Of the top 9 WC teams, Portland is the only team with a lower FG % compared to it's opponents (46.25% vs 46.51%)

That's not to say they don't do some things well. They are the #2 rebounding team in the league (% wise), #6 in 3 point FG %, #5 in the league in Team T/O's. That said, I think we would have to overachieve big-time to get a seed better than #7 this year. Maybe, if everything goes right . . . we can climb to #4/5/6. Maybe Utah, Denver, New Orleans, and/or Houston suffers a major injury (s) On the other hand, we are a Brandon Roy/Joel Pryz injury away from dissaster. With Greg out, our Front Court depth is weak.

Until we tighten up our defense, and get more easy baskets we probably aren't going to blow many teams out. I think I got caught up in thinking the Blazers might have a playoff run in them this year, and who knows? Maybe they do. More than likely it appears we'll finish #7/8 and maybe we win one playoff game vs LA or SA. But a 50 win season and a playoff appearance is a good season - we all have to remember that.

That said, I hope they address some of the team weaknesses this summer. One-and-done playoff appearance is fine for this year, will it be next year? I hope not.

I agree.

Plus, 21, to 32, to 41, to 50+(?) wins effectively utilizing only the draft is a nice trend....thus far.

They like putting games to the wire and hoping for a two point cushion just to win.

Why do jackrabbits run across the road right in front of semis? They dig the adrenaline rush. ( paraphrased from Hunter Thompson)

As per normal, Portland seems to play to the level of their competition. I'm at least curious as to how they will fare against the Lakers Monday night.

as most young teams do. i know many don't want to hear this again, but this is a young team and there is a learning curve to the NBA. most teams don't go from being crappy to winning championships, it is a process. step one is winning at home, we have that down, now what i'm looking for the rest of the way is to begin getting competitive on the road. that to me is the next sign that this team is getting, after that we'll start winning some of these big road games.

let's just sit back and enjoy the ride, because that is truly the fun part.
