Are they the team that effectively manhandled the Spurs, or are they the team that escaped almost certain disgrace at the hands of the Timberwolves? Or, are they somewhere in between?
How can they play so crisp and confident at times, yet, at other times, lax and mediocre...or without a seeming sense of urgency? Or, is this just the way of the NBA at large?
Not sure. Perhaps, though, that old adage is correct. Good to very good teams will win at least 80% of their home games and at least 50% of their road games. The low end of that equates to 53 wins (.650), BTW.)
If the above is true, then I suppose I shouldn't get so high and/or low after each game....take it all in stride, keep and eye on that "last 10 games" figure, then rest in the knowledege that, if the Blazers are winning 6-of-10 or 7-of-10, all will be OK in the end. The good, bad, and ugly all comes out in the proverbial wash.
Correct?
Sure, I'd love to see the Blazers come out firing on all cylinders each and every game. However, I know that's not realistic thinking. When I see brow-wipers such as last night's narrow escape, I must keep reminding myself that, if this truly is a successful team, then, basically speaking, for every 6.5 close wins, there will be 3.5 close losses. For every 6.5 blowout wins, there will be 3.5 blowout losses....or so on and such.
That said, the Blazers are definitely headed in the direction which I had hoped for at the beginning of the season. In fact, I'd say they're eclipsing those expectations. They're hovering around 63%. That equates to nearly 52 wins. At the beginning of the season, I penned them in for around 50 wins. At the time, I thought that was a fairly optimistic prediction. So, there ya go.
So, then, who are these Blazers?
In my mind, I'd say they're not quite in the ranks of the Lakers or (declining) Spurs. However, they're suddenly smack dab in the pack with the Hornets, Nuggets, Rockets, Jazz, and Mavericks. Much better company than they were in at the conclusion of last season. And, that's OK with me.
