This past offseason, centers Brook Lopez and Roy Hibbert got maximum-sized deals and Omer Asik received more than $8 million a year from Houston, after averaging just 3.1 ppg the season before.

Timberwolves center Nikola Pekovic, who is set to become a restricted free-agent after this season and previously expressed his desire to stay, may be next in line to receive a mega deal.

It just won’t come from Timberwolves President of basketball operations David Kahn.

Kahn is not that great of a fan of Pekovic and would let him go if Portland or another team offered him a max or near max money, according to Britt Robson, who has covered the Timberwolves since 1990 for City Pages, The Rake, SportsIllustrated.com, and most recently MinnPost.com.

Minnesota will be able to match any offer sheet Pekovic signs, since he is set to become a restricted free-agent.

There has been talk that the Blazers may make a run at Pekovic ever since Kahn tried to pry guard/forward Nicolas Batum away from them as a restricted free-agent last offseason.

I don't think he is worth the max...Interesting though.

Why would they mention Portland? Kahn had to have leaked this just to tie up money from Portland for a week before he resigns Pekovic. Either that, or he is begging for a trade at the deadline.

Not sure, That article came out December 27th, 2012.... Didn't remember reading it here so I thought i would post it.

Pretty funny they mention Portland.

wouldn't surprise me if Kahn got fired this offseason.

If Kahn even makes it to the end of this season. Clearly the man has some serious issues with the Blazers. What a bizarre article. Thanks for posting it! I still have no clue why Portland would be mentioned, or why Kahn would say a thing about Pekovic at this point. Talk about blowing up your locker room!

Just a completely random statement from Kahn, and it's weird it is from 3 weeks ago.

What the hell? Is the guy sane?

Honestly, it sounds like some ham-fisted attempt to bait Allen/Olshey into making Pek an offer and then tying up their cap-room, just so he can dick around for the full allotment of time and then go ahead and match.

Being an old newspaper guy, it just looks like he's using them as a means of getting his message out.

Kahn isn't actually quoted, though. The people covering the team just may be trying to sabotage him to get him out and get somebody competent in at Minnesota.

Yeah I guess that's possible. Who knows what the hell that guy is really thinking. :dunno:

If true, that's what I thought, too. Still, what a clusterfuck that franchise is right now. Rubio is a bust, Love wants out, and it's an east coast prep school in terms of a roster after that. Pekovic is their best player. Am I insane for thinking this?

The rubes have an article on this on rubechat.

Why do people keep bringing up Portland?

They can't afford to offer Pek a max contract...they use the money they needed for that kinda deal on matching for Batum.

That is from NattaNerNutta

No.

If the Blazers renounce Hickson, don't they have room for a max contract? I think they do.

Pekovic is a 20+ PER player who is in the low 20s in usage. He'd be the perfect complement to LMA!

I believe we have something like 13.2m if we renounce Hickson and don't have our draft pick. Enough for a max contract for someone off there first contract.

Fuck it, I would do it just to mess with them and see if they match. It would be funny when they match and then Love leaves when his deal is up and they're stuck with a gimpy Rubio and a max Pekovic.

But if someone gives an offer and he accepts; doesn't minny have to match or let go within a few days now?

Portland is desperate for a center

Our all-star PF said we need a 7 footer to help with defense

If I am Portland and he is willing to go, I'd deal Hickson, Babbitt and Williams to the Wolves for Pekovic and Williams.

That might get them to bite since they would get out of Williams salary. Williams is still better than any bench player we have right now, so he would be an upgrade for us as well. It would give us Bird rights to Pekovic too

Except that Kahn would never consent to a trade that actually helps us. Otherwise, yeah, I'd absolutely make that deal.

How far off is it for them to accept? A future first? Leonard? Hopefully one of the penis boys will let me know when school gets out

This is all speculation, one guys opinion. No quotes. But Kahn's history makes it believable.

If it's on the internet it's true.

Just like I said about Spencer Hawes in that thread, I would think that if Minnesota wanted to shop Pekovic, they'd be able to get something better for him than JJ Hickson and Meyers Leonard.

You'd have to throw in Leonard to even make it interesting ... even then I don't see that deal going anywhere.

sounds like a poster from here or rubechat made up some inside source to pretend to live out the obvious revenge angle
