Like the opposite of Nate. Those closest to Canales say the two traits that summarize him most are energy and hard work. During the season, before games and after practices, he bounces around the gymnasium offering fist bumps, saying hello and building relationships. He seems to know everyone's name and is perpetually positive. And it's always been this way.
In the video room, Canales says, he learned the NBA game. He spent countless hours scrutinizing and evaluating, both as part of his job duties and in his free time.
"It's set the foundation for me in terms of the preparation in my growth," Canales said.
In a short span, Canales had connected and made an impact with countless players. It's Canales who wrote, "Stay Humble," on a post-it note and placed it in Roy's locker -- a message that remains in the All-Star's locker to the day.
"He has the respect of the players," Bayno said. "It's something that develops with the time that you put in with them. When they see that you're willing to make them better, willing to get in the gym with them at night, in the morning, watch film with them -- that's how you develop that bond, that respect. And he has that, without a doubt."
I wanted Caleb... Good move. Not the answer, but much better than Bickerstaff
This is the definition of cleaning house. Now if we could only get a new GM and fire Larry.
What do I do if they ask me to be his assistant? I might not be able to post here anymore.......
The players respect and like Kaleb a lot. They will bust their ass for him. It's a surprising move, but I like it.
I hope Kaleb brought a suit with him on the road trip.
You guys are underestimating this guy. Whatever, I guess he needs to prove himself for acceptance.
Gee, you think so? Has he ever been even a lead assistant, let alone a head coach, at any level of basketball that doesn't consist of rolling a ball out on the court during a summer league game?
You've had daily meltdowns over Nate being fired, yet you're already sold on the video guy as the next great coach?
Bonkersville
I think Kaleb will do fine. I met him and got a chance to talk with him a bit at the meet & greet ABM organized a couple of years ago. He's a smart, dedicated guy who will work night & day. I think the players know and respect his work ethic. That said, the team is low on talent and we shouldn't expect more than .500 ball from here on out.
Kaleb = the next Eric Spoelstra.
Both young, both worked their way up from being a intern video guy.
In April 2008, Spoelstra was named successor to Pat Riley as head coach of the Miami Heat. In naming Spoelstra as head coach, Riley said: "This game is now about younger coaches who are technologically skilled, innovative, and bring fresh new ideas. That's what we feel we are getting with Erik Spoelstra. He's a man that was born to coach."[11] Riley also noted: "A lot of players want the discipline; they will play [hard] for Spoelstra, because 'they respect him.'"
This quote from Riley about Spoelstra seems very similar to what could be said about Kaleb.

Kevin Pritchard @nbakev
Quick thing on Kaleb Canales - He used to sleep at the practice facility because he didn't want to miss a player coming in at night #blazers

One big difference is that Riley was a great basketball mind who was allowed to name his successor.
Comparing the Heat under Riley to the Blazers under Larry Miller/Paul Allen is funny to me.
“He just gave us a set this morning and it has a bunch of options in it,” Raymond Felton said. “He let us read and react to defenses. We didn't just do one thing, we had multiple options.”
In such a short time as the interim head coach, Canales had made an impression on his group of guys.
“I got the ball in so many different spots, they couldn't double team me...I felt like we had so many options tonight we had so many guys playing well taking good shots that they couldn't stop us tonight,” LaMarcus Aldridge said.
Aldridge even went as far and said this was the most fun he's played in a game.
“It's a totally different feel. It's hard to explain,” Luke Babbitt said. “We're excited to play for Coach K. He brings energy and everybody knows what kind of person he is. So, we're just going to play hard for him.”
In recent memory, the Trail Blazers haven't been in games the way they were tonight. Coach Canales stressed before the game that he just wanted his team to play hard, compete, and have fun and you could observe and see that was the case tonight.
My god. It's like a huge weight has been lifted off me after all these years. I'm serious.Check out some of these comments. Pretty incriminating about Nate.
