Karl Could Miss 1st Round

DENVER (AP)—Denver Nuggets coach George Karl may miss the first round of the playoffs as he recovers from cancer treatments.

Karl’s life partner, Kim Van Deraa, told The Denver Post that Karl won’t return in the regular season and probably will also miss the first round of the playoffs.

“To count out all the playoffs, that’s up to his body,” she said. “Who knows when his return will be? No one knows. He doesn’t even know. I’m sure he’s hoping that if we go on a playoff run, that he can (coach) this season.”

Karl has been fighting throat and neck cancer during the past two months. He has finished radiation treatment and is set to have his final round of chemotherapy on Wednesday.

Van Deraa said Karl, who has lost nearly 25 pounds, struggles to speak and may have to feed himself liquids through a tube for another three to six months. She also said that pain medication makes it difficult for him to concentrate for long periods of time.

The Nuggets have pulled into a tie with Utah for first place in the Northwest Division, along with tying the Jazz, Dallas and Phoenix for the second seed in the Western Conference playoffs.

Actually, I didn't. I had thought it was some type of skin cancer, or such, that didn't require chemo. Obviously, I now know differently.

Same here ABM.. not all of us knew it was as bad. I hope Karl has a speedy recovery.

I expected his cancer to ruin his team's season once he started treatment. He was trying to working much more, not less, than anyone else who goes through the painful treatment. Like a player, he's supposed to say "I'll try to play" when he knows he can't. I think he's gone for all the playoffs. Yet the Nuggets are so good that they still beat us easily.

His son Coby barely lived through this a year ago. Even if George makes it through, it will probably recur in a few years.
