Former Jesuit High coach Kathryn Adelman Naro convicted of drunken driving in Washington County court

A former Jesuit High School basketball coach and member of a prominent Oregon coaching family has been found guilty of drunken driving in her second violation.

Kathryn Adelman Naro, daughter of Rick Adelman, a former Portland Trail Blazers player and coach, is due to be sentenced April 16.

Her attorney, Stephen Houze, says she plans to appeal last Thursday's conviction in Washington County Circuit.

Judge Charles Bailey found her guilty of driving under the influence, driving while suspended and reckless driving.

Houze said she was arrested at her home in Washington County at 10:00 p.m. in Aug. 12, 2009. He said she plans to appeal the conviction.

“We will challenge the legality of the arrest,” he said.

She was not available for comment.

Adelman Naro joined Jesuit in 1993 as a girls basketball coach and English teacher and was promoted to head coach in 1995.

She was arrested Sept. 26, 2008 on accusations of careless driving and driving under the influence of intoxicants. She pleaded guilty to drunken driven and entered a diversion program the following month.

She resigned from Jesuit High.

Houze said she is still in the treatment program.

Son and daughter both have two DUI's each.

I remember hearing that Rick always kept a keg in his office when he coached for the Blazers. Thought that was kind of cool.

Now, not so much.

Kathy Adelman is a good coach. Hopefully she and her brother gets these demons under control. Or at least stop driving. Jeez...

I hope they lock her up for a while. Drunk idiots kill innocent people when they get behind the wheel... I'm amazed that some seem to have such a cavalier attitude towards DUIs

That sentence makes it sound like 100% of times driving drunk causes a death. Actually it's more like 1% of 1% of 1%. In her case, a prison sentence won't have the effect that intervention from friends and relatives would have. It's her 2nd offense, so she needs a few days in jail to shock her. Then she needs constant peer pressure to fight her inner tendencies, which otherwise would just recur after prison. Peer pressure can be created by ordering her into group sessions--people who will phone her and keep her away from bars.

Long prison sentences accomplish nothing except revenge from haters.

I've lost a good friend to a drunk driver. I've also watched the devastation to my neighbors family when a repeat drunk driver swerved off the road and killed their 8 year old.

Long term prison sentences keep menaces to society off the road and would serve as a real deterrent to this pathetic selfish behavior. Threatening the lives of the general public isn't a joke. I'd ask anyone who reads this to please not be one
