Ken Griffey Makes The Hall of Fame

Just wanted to give a shout out to one of my childhood heroes, The Kid. He was elected with the highest percentage of votes in history (along with Mike Piazza.) Though I am a die hard Yankee fan and don't care about anything Seattle, it would be nice if he went in a Mariner. But I'm betting Cincy, since he's from Ohio.

Griffey was one of those once in a lifetime athletes that is so popular he pulled in casual fans. I hate baseball, but griffey made me appreciate it as a kid and I loved watching him play. (Bo Jackson was the other because I'm a raiders fan)

Also sported some of his sneakers as a kid. And of course, loved ken griffeys major league baseball on snes.

I hope he is smart enough to realize that the hall of fame portion of his career was played in Seattle, and there is really no justification for him going in under any other logo. I also hope he has his hat on backward on his bust/plaque.

He got bigger and improved his physique when he was with the Mets. But Jr. suffered from injuries and sadly, let himself go in the latter part of his career.

I was listening to ESPN radio and they were basically saying that some voters believe that nobody should get in with a unanimous vote so they will vote no just to keep that streak going.

His swing was the essence of beauty wasn't it! The perfect combination of balance, strength, form and precision. You try to describe it for people who have never played baseball and they just don't understand. It's akin to Ben Hogan's golf swing.... Jr. just "owned it."
I will go on to say that there are other players whose swings are right up there for me.... Don Mattingly, Gary Sheffield, and Rafael Palmeiro all were unique.

I don't think it really matters. Before Jackie Robinson broke the color line and Latinos were allowed to compete in baseball.... I mean you could question the MLE statistical analysis of everybody in there before 1947. If they weren't playing against "the best." I trust Bill James' list of the 100 best players in baseball history. But is Walter Johnson at his peak better than Pedro in his famous run? I doubt it!

Disagree. It depends on their reasoning. People should be permitted to have differing opinions; otherwise what's the point of having a vote at all?

For instance, consider the fact that the voting instructions don't require a voter to select the 10 most worthy candidates, only to select up to 10 that are deserving. If a particular voter believed there were 11 worthy candidates, and they were limited to only 10 votes, there's a valid argument to be made for not voting for the shoo-in and selecting the other 10.

Yeah, what if all the voters decided not to vote for anyone? What if all the ballots got lost in the mail? What if black market gamblers betting on the voting results blackmailed all the writers into electing David Eckstein?

Obviously none of those things were going to happen, just like your "what if." Think about it: If you're strapped for cash, and you have the option to skip your mortgage one month without repercussion, do you pay it that month anyway because it's the most important bill? Or do you allocate your funds to the bills that need attention that month?

I agree that anybody withholding votes specifically to prevent unanimity is intentionally subverting the integrity of the voting process and doesn't deserve to participate. But if they just choose to allocate their available votes in a way you don't like, or they have some rationale for not believing that Griffey was a worthy candidate--and they are consistent in applying that logic--then it is un-American to attempt to silence them just because you don't like the way they think.
