Kerr not interested in GM job

My money is on Jeff Bower to be the guy

Post padding again, MM? You started the thread, then responded with who you got your money on? Before anyone else posted? Why not make one post?

(For the record, I don't really care, but I wanted to call you out on it and give you shit.)

FYI, I agree - Bower could be the guy. Or I could definitely see the position being somewhat two-headed. Chad and his crew more managing player evaluation (both for guys coming out of college and already in the NBA) and having more say there. And someone better with negotiating trades and contracts.

I forgot that Kerr played for the Blazers one season.

Yes, I am all about post padding :roll eyes:

Everyone makes short little Twitter-like posts, but I post complete paragraphs.

I should get into post-padding.

Is there a decent GM candidate in existence that would want to work for the Trail Blazers, given the lack of autonomy and the weird Vulcan GM-by-committee BS?

I expect the only established GMs that would do it would insist on complete control, and considering PA's ownership history that is very unlikely.

No business owner in history has given any underling complete control. In every NBA team, the owner approves or disapproves player changes before they happen.

You're right, I really meant to imply a more normal GM/owner relationship as opposed to the Vulcan board of confusion.
And it should be obvious by now that I'm also padding

I really don't understand why everyone just assumes that "qualified" people wouldn't want the job. There are 30 total GM positions in the NBA and a GM position doesn't open up everyday. Even teams with bad histories (The clippers) don't' have a problem hiring GM's. Heck even if we hire and fire the guy he is gonna get paid for the 3 to 4 year contract we give him.

For me it's a combination of what I hear and the fact that many have already turned us down

It was a few, and they took themselves out of the running when it became obvious that the Blazers weren't thrilled enough after the interview to make a fast decision. It's always embarrassing when your employer knows you're waiting for word from another employer. Instead of being left hanging for weeks, they saved face.

The easier way is to return to your old screen name.

Woj was on the bald face truth yesterday, and said pretty much what I have been saying.

The Blazers have contacted several currently employed GMs and have been told no. Said the ownership situation is far too uncertain for a guy to leave an existing job to take.

Also one candidate that spoke to Woj said that Portland is unappealing because of the business structure above the GM position.

Apparently Woj has mediocre sources, huh RoyToy?

I never thought we would get a GM currently employed by another team. The business structure makes sense that people who would want full control would find it unappealing, I still don't think were struggling to find candidates to Interview for the job. I'v never been impressed with big names who just seem to keep getting recycled by teams year after year, at some point you gotta take a flyer on someone who hasn't been fired/let go from the job.

I agree with you 100% on that point. My issue is the candidate that said it is unappealing because of the business structure. My guess would be he was talking about Vulcan, Kolde, or Larry Boy.

My worry isn't landing a current GM, it's landing a qualified sought after assistant or player personnel guy. Not having to settle for a Chad Buchanan type who is talented, but clearly in over his head

The search is probably two stages:. 1) current GMs (few willing to leave their jobs) and later, 2) assistant GMs (most want the promotion). They're still on Stage 1.

Well the two names we know about, Kerr and Groom aren't even currently in management positions in the NBA or any other basketball league, so I disagree with what stage we are in

No GM candidate that is not desperate for a job will take this position as long as Paul Allen and the Vulcans continue thinking they know more about hoops than qualified basketball minds! That's also why the Blazers wont get anything more than a yes man coach next year too. The Blazers will never contend for anything as long as PA and the Vulcans are around.

Great teams are run solidly from the top down. With Portland the obvious weaknees is the top!

Nicely put
