The Nets had turned down Kidd's appeal for a contract extension just days before he made his bleak assertion about the team's future, according to three people close to the point guard who requested anonymity so as not to damage his relationship with the team.

The 13th-year pro, one of the great players of his generation, makes $19.7 million this season and $21.4 million next year, the final year of his deal, which makes him eligible for a one-year extension for the 2009-10 season -- or a two-year extension, if he waits until this summer.

But Kidd would be 36 when that $24 million thank-you gift would kick in, so when agent Jeff Schwartz asked team president Rod Thorn to discuss it, he was told it isn't in the cards.

That rejection, Kidd's associates say, was at the root of his frustration -- though the team's play had a lot to do with it as well.

He's dreaming if he thinks he's getting that.

He can't possibly have ever thought he'd get a $24M contract at age 36.

Maybe he knows someone's gonna be here by '09. You know who I mean, yes?

Kidd just came off looking really bad because of this, it won't end well.

wow things are looking bad. Well this explains alot of the current quotes. Smart move by the nets though. This is a business after all but I see kidd point.

Kidd is the type of player that can play into his 40's like Stockton because of how smart he is on the court. But 24 mill?? I don't know about that..

We won't pay that much for him.

I love Kidd, but he has to play like 16 - 8 -11 every night and shoot in 45%, then it's worthy of paying him that much.

I thought he wants talent around him? He already has more than 100 mil in the bank and he's pushing us for 24 mil? Cmon Kidd.

Universe, you are right. Maybe he doesn't want the ring, he just wants the money.

QUOTE (Black Republican)

Give him what he wants.......Without Kidd, there would be NO Nets.

it's all about the name on the front not the name on the back. The Nets are looking at this from business side. Why pay kidd this money? They are not contending for a championship. He does not bring people to the stands. So how does this benifit them?

The Spurs are currently under the cap and are still in the mix for championships.

I'm even surprised by this. That's way too much money.

Seems like more of a statement to the organization, he may be just laying the groundwork for the Nets to go all out, above the cap. As in "Why didn't you sign Hite, or House", "Don't expect me to take a paycut if you're going to skimp on the bench anyway". It might also be posturing to let them know that he's not interested in comming back? Maybe Gilbert is on the way? Who knows. The only thing I've learned from reading into Kidd's statements it that it's pointless to try.

I don't see why everyone is so mad about this. Thats the price Kidd feels its worth to put up with playing for NJ be they contenders or not. He may not get that from another team but the situation he could be going to would probably be worth the paycut in his mind. This is Kidd's way of trying to force Thorn's hand is all because he wants to play elsewhere with either one of his USA teammates, that's pretty clear with the passive agressive crap we keep seeing pop up in newspapers. Yeah it sucks Jason wants out but coming up on the end of his beginnings of the end of his career he wants to be able to get something out of it be it money or a shot at a ring. Can't blame the guy for trying but it's crappy knowing his attention is elsewhere when we need him focused on winning games.

I totally understand this. This is a business it didn't matter what Jason Kidd did for the Nets, The trip to the finals and all the return to glory stuff. The Nets were still ready to move him for Bynum. the Nets will do what's best for this and Kidd should do the same. He sees where this team is heading and see where others are going. He wants out and I think the Nets will grant his wish soon.

Yeah, that's bullsh*t. I dont' think he's worth the money he's making now. He's making more than vince and RJ and he's not even a scoring threat. I know he gets triple doubles but he can thank his teammates for that. F**k kidd....trade him for a big man and let marcus williams take his spot.

Trade him...go ahead. Watch how fast the Nets fall apart.

And last time I checked, Kidd isn't demanding a trade nor is he giving up. Some of you seem to be under that impression.

My thoughts....first of all, this is probably just the beginning of his agent's negotiating strategy....but from Kidd's point of view, he is worth this much if Marbury can get $20M (was that his Nets deal?) and if the Nets were willing to pay Mutombo $20M....and yes, he is one of the few NBA players that earn every penny he gets...but, from the business side, is he really going to get MJ money?....forget about signing any free agents for more than the minimum if he gets it.....and really, for the Nets to continue to rebuild and to have any hopes of keeping even two of the big three, the Nets need Kidd to accept a contract extension similar to the one VC signed...a contract that would allow the Nets to stay under the luxury tax the next couple of years, one that would for examplekick in next year and pay out around $45-55M over 4 years, not $45 for 2 years

Yer right he asked for an extension, it's a great way to make it seem like he really wanted to stay with NJ the whole time even though the asking price was rediculous. Kidd is trapped as Thorn has denied his previous trade requests and rebuffed offers to teams he'd love to play for and this is the last bit of leverage he has and is basically a final notice to the team that they have only a short period of time to either become a serious contender or deal him off because he'll be gone. No question there's alot of reading between the lines in Nets news on this board but it's no coincidence that we're hearing how great Kidd thinks other guys are when they're supposedly pushing for an extension. No agent in their right mind would believe Thorn would agree to that extension and denying it has now given Kidd the opportunity to choose where he wants to go or leave us with nothing.

Why should they pay a 35 year old man 24 million, that's ridiculous. Vince is about to be 31 and he's not making as muchashe used to.

PS. I don't think the nets will fall apart if they trade Kidd. As long as they get a really good big man they can be as good as the celtics, maybe better.

Um isnt Vince making more money per year now than he ever has?

PS: If they trade Kidd, they will enter rebuilding mode. no way a team gives up a perrenial big man for a point guard that has only a few years left in the tank.

I wish he would ask for 24 million more often. As soon as he made those comments to the media he started to win. Then when they started to wear off they started to lose again.

I mean, we're talking about an extension for the 09-10 season. By the time it comes around we'll be able to negotiate something proper. I don't think its a big deal, really. It's just news worthy, thats all.

I agree. Kidd clearly wants out.
