Just thought I’d let you know that I’m still alive. Been on the Big Island a week and a half and the volcano hasn’t gotten me yet. I’m on the west side of the island and other than some vog you wouldn’t know anything was out of the ordinary. Beach time!
buy a face mask...the vog might seem invisible but it's tiny shards of black glass that will damage your lungs...vog is always bad in Kona

bad move by your folks...the vog is worse in Kona than most places...should have flown into Hilo and gone up the eastern coast...stay away from the west and the south..

Oh they are already back in oregon and had a good time!

I have many friends who live there....several have lost their homes....guy I played music with for years lost a 40 acre plot and several expensive houses on it ...he's left with a pile of rocks. Fellow teacher at the college I worked with lost his home as well...sucks big time..there are no fresh water wells so people catch rainwater from the roof to drink and use...it's now filled with tiny black shards of volcanic glass..if you don't have water, you don't have much

the road around the island...is about 300 miles round trip....the road takes one break going south to Pahoa and that's a short hiway

Vog doesn't take the highway...

We’re not in Kona. Staying away from there. We’re staying at the Mauna Lani. Most of the time the trade winds have been strong and this area has been clear. The last couple of days the winds died down and we’re getting some haze at least part of the day. We’ve spent a good bit of the time taking trips to Hilo an Hawi for the cleaner air. From what I’ve read, there’s not much health risk in this area and the particles are too small to be filtered with a mask anyway.
