Yup, definately need an upgrade from Boyle, no two ways about it. It shouldn't be that hard to find in another month or so. Maybe someone like Hainsey or Clitsome from Wpg. It's turnover city with the whole defensive corps to be fair however.

It's actually not. Go look at the numbers. Montreal has THREE defenseman in the top 15 of turnovers per game, including your boy Petry who you were drooling over. Rangers have zero in the top 15 in that category. Yet I dont see or hear a single Montreal fan complaining about their defense like we do.

But don't let the numbers get in the way of your narrative, and your narrative is that this defense wouldnt start for an AHL team.

You can quote stats all you want. If you watch the games, the defense turns the puck over constantly and has all season. I could care less what the stats say. It's just not how much they turn it over, it's the kind of turnovers. The turnovers they make lead to glorious scoring chances.

Right, because I don't watch the games. All I'm saying is that everyone here says "turnover city" or the d turns it over "constantly" and the numbers show that just isn't true. If you want to say their turnovers are "worse" than others, that's completely different.

You guys also need to remember how AV's system operates. It's built on the breakout pass and the counter attack. Defenseman are often left on an island as the forwards looks to move up ice and receive the pass. Of course the D will sometimes get bogged down with no support, and give up scoring chances. It's how the system is designed. You can't play counter-attack hockey without giving up some chances. I guess we can go back to torts hockey and have the whole team exit the zone together, necessitating a dump and chase to gain the offensive zone, but people bitched about that too. AV's system is very hard on defenseman as we have all said. They have not been good this year but I fully expect them to get better as they have in each season so far.

Al, I'm not sure if there's a stat for that. I'm not an advanced stat guy at all, But I wanted to look up that turnover one because people act like NYR defenseman are the only ones with give aways.

I hear ya and it want meant to be disrespectful. ..we are never satisfied. Three ir four seasons ago it was "we need to open up offensively that the tean was too much pack the bodies in the d zone and block everything"

Chuck, not sure what your implying but if its the defense has been good I think your off base. Prod makes good point about AV's system requiring faster D-men because if your playing fast break hockey and constantly pinching you are going to give up breakaways and odd man rushes. The problem with that is in addition to what you get from playing that system our D is actually also turning the puck over in their own end when they have possession which end up being on henrik's save highlight reels. Guys like girardi, staal, klein and yandle for whatever reason seem to be constantly knocked off the puck. The guy who doesn't get knocked off the puck and gets it out of the zone(yes chuck you guessed it) is Mcilreith who actually fits AV's system better than most of the others cause he doesn't give up the puck. He takes the puck away and moves it up ice. If klein is out I would like to see AV pair McD with dylan, Yandle with girardi and because their the only 2 left staal with boyle.

There may be some truth to this. AV's system is all about the first pass. Staal and Girardi are not good with the first pass. They want to get it and get rid of it as soon as they can by sending it out of the zone, not look to make a play. If McIlrath can get the timing down on those passes he may be a good fit here after all. That was always the knock against him but he's looked good in that respect thus far. Not to mention everything else he brings. There was a play in the Flyer game where a shot came from the point, a Flyer near the crease tried to get in position for a rebound and McIlrath just boxed him out. The Flyer looked like he ran into a brick wall. No other defenseman on this team can make that subtle little play; they would end up face down in the crease or on top of Hank.

While discussing Yandle, it's interesting that his TOI is way down from his career. He was consistently 22 minutes plus in Arizona, here he's about 18 minutes. I'd like to see him get some more time and get into a rhythm. He's also a guy who likes to carry the puck, not necessarily look for an outlet as soon as he gets it, and that may be part of the reason he hasn't looked like the Yandle we were hoping for. I fully expect him to continue to improve, and a few more minutes a game will only speed that process up.

Prod I'm sure you watch every game but you sound like stat geek and your stat was useless. If you watch the games all the defense has done is turn the puck over right in front of our goalie in our own end a ton. They also don't cover anybody in the crease for crap. They don't hit anybody other than Dylan. They don't win battles in the corners for jack. Basically, what this team has is a bunch of lazy dogs on defense counting their money.

This might be a blessing in disguise because now our thickheaded coach will have to play McIlrath every game like he should have been doing for weeks. Now, maybe Staal will get banged up and they can play Skjei. In other words, maybe the GM and our coach will realize we have overpaid defenseman on this team that need to be traded. Klein isn't one of them. However, Girardi, Staal, Yandle and Boyle are. Lucky we only pay half of Yandle's salary.
