I remember years ago, a report on one the news shows, talking about a similar "game" younger people were doing (I think it was gang related, but I don't recall).

Anyway, they showed footage of some guy walking down a street, in a normal downtown area. He was a middle aged white guy, who was minding his own business. All the sudden he gets a fist in his face and he is knocked out.

The idiots who punched him of course, thought it was so funny.

The street rats have serious attitude and are looking to get into a verbal or physical fight with anyone they think is "corporate." Downtown, I run into them and hear more stories about them than any kind of gang activity.

I don't know why Ptd has a reputation as a place to go if you are a homeless teen or young adult, but it sucks.

Yeah, for the most part it is the friendly attitude towards dirt bags, occupy and the ease of attaining social services. The I5 corridor is one big hobo camp from Eugene to Portland.

I dunno if Portland still is, but it was the teenage homeless capital of the US about a decade ago. Both of the reasons you offer are a big part of the problem. The other piece is that many of the street kids are heavily into drugs, and black tar heroin is/was more readily available in Portland (and cheaper) than any other West Coast city.
