When you get that first riding mower you'll never go back! You can't....you quit walking and then the inevitable happens....next will be the electric shopping cart!

Here's HCP's new lawnmower.

They are too beautiful, NOT to drive one!

I’ve heard Kia has stepped their game up and their reputation has improved. It wasn’t long ago they were THE example of a car that wouldn’t go 100k miles, so good on them for getting their shit together if they truly have. I’ve never heard anything too good or bad about a Hyundai, my brother had one that seemed pretty decent.
When it comes to daily drivers though, I only fuck with Toyota. If I lived in a warmer climate, Honda would be on the table as well, but I gotta have 4x4.

Here’s what crazy Scotty Kilmer has to say about Kia and Hyundai:

I don’t know if anyone remembers Car Talk on NPR, it was this guy and his brother. The dude is nuts but he knows his shit.

I got addicted to SK's ranting and now wear sunglasses for no apparent reason. Don't forget "I have been a mechanic for 50 years."--- is a SK quote.

FIAT (Fix It Again Tony) sucks and always will. I had one in the early 70's and their crappy quality is the tradition they maintain today.

Toyota or Nissan all the way....better engineered and the motors last twice as long as the Kia or Honda....parts everywhere...anybody can work on them
IMG_259412 Accord .JPG I'll include Honda (012 Accord LX-P). Nothing but Satisfaction. My car was hit by a deer, I hit an ice mound and then it was whacked by a teenage girl driver from the passenger side door at 30 MPH blowing out my tire and forced me to avoid a curb so I could rest it in a porno shop parking lot. Of course , I had to go into the shop to find out what the Rt. address was.

Bump.

Almost 3 years on my wife's Kia Soul Electric. Not a damn thing gone wrong. Unlike the e-Golf she had before - the battery management is much better - and there was less than 1% of battery degradation in 3 years, vs 33% on the Volkswagen. Since the lease is almost done - we started looking at alternatives. The Tesla Model 3 is fantastic (my FIL has one) - but it is so much longer than Kia that it is harder to park it here - and Tesla no longer has federal rebates available - making it a lot more expensive.

After some tests - the wife decided to go with a Hyundai Kona electric - a little smaller than the Soul (which is very nice), much nicer looking and almost twice the power, add 260 miles range (basically, Tesla equivalent) - and this is a great update for the Soul. Hope it proves to be as reliable as the Kia was, because if it does - she might actually buy it at the end of the lease since the range is good enough to serve her 99% of the time (vs. 90% of the time for the Kia that only has 120 miles range).

It's funny that Electric vehicles have propelled the Americans (Tesla, Ford) and Korean (Hyundai, Kia) ahead of the Europeans (VW is the only one that seems to really get their head in the game seriously) and Japanese (all still selling very compromised EVs - the only Japanese EV that is interesting is the "Honda e" and only as a city car).

As for the Kona, that thing is seriously fast...

I still love our Prius....new in 2013, never had an issue....although mine is a hybrid....great little car for the money....

Yeah they're amazing cars at getting in other peoples way. That not being able to see behind you feature is great. :)

We drove my in-laws Prius cross country in 2017 - it was a very good car, but rear visibility is compromised, for sure. Before the better half got the Kona - we tested the Ioniq electric - which has amazing deals going for it. Unfortunately, it's rear visibility is as bad if not worse than the Prius - so we did not get it.

My car functions in a very responsible manner on the road....never gets in anybody's way...I can see fine as well...don't know what that issue is......ever drive a van? The vehicles that get in people's way are always monster trucks with tailgates 4 ft off the ground from my Oregon driving experience....those gun racks don't help visability either

My next car...... Audi E-Tron GT

Audi makes beautiful looking EVs. I would wait and see how good it is tho, so far, their EVs have been pretty bad in efficiency - getting mid-70s MPGe which is frankly, embarrassing. My wife's old Soul EV gets 108, the Kona electric is at 120 and the latest Model 3 standard is at 140. They have a lot of catching up to do - and if it is based on the same architecture as the Porsche Taycan - I would suspect it would be very fast but very inefficient.

Shit! There is no way I could afford that.
On a side note, one of my best friends just got and Taycan this past fall.....WOW! What a vehicle. He loves it.

Funny thing about the Prius...... this is the vehicle that tailgates me the most around town. I have a fast car, but I don't drive fast. I swear a few times a week, I have a prius on my tail, never fails. These people buy these cars to save the earth, yet drive like asshats!

I got a ride in one just before the entire Covid stuff started. It sure is fast and nicely built - but frankly, other than wanting a Porsche badge, a Tesla Model S seems like a better option - more space, just as fast, 1/2 the price. Frankly, if you want a track worthy Porsche, just buy a GT4 Cayman or GT3 911 - either one will be much better than the Taycan.

I was looking into an Ioniq recently. Were there any other reasons you went a different direction?

Visibility first. It was also longer than what we wanted. We wanted an ev only, so it also helped that the Kona has more range.

If these things do not bother you (or if you are looking at the hybrid or plugin and not pure-ev - the Ioniq seems nice - and at least for the EV - they had some crazy deals for leasing it.

Read that Elon Musk is doing something like that. Selling all his houses, and I’d assume, expensive cars too, because apparently he’s not about that materialistic life anymore.

Life is simple.

Black V-neck and a dram of Macallan

Yay or nay?

Was thinking should I get Kia in the future vs a Honda?

Little sportier, the big SUVs seem pretty dope (Telluride or Palisade) with lots of Tech. Little big for my needs but they will probably make some nice midsize or compact SUVs

Even the Optima, I rented over the summer and it was very solid and smartly put together. I got some ads and they are like 20k which seems like a good deal.

I do worry about random repairs and maintenance costs. They do have a good warranty, but after that?

Both are good but Hyundai is considered the cream of Korean cars. If I had to buy an Asian car I'd have to go with another Toyota Camry. There's the most bang for the buck.

Hyundai is the largest shareholder of Kia Motors, so Kia is technically a part of the Hyundai Motor Group. Just like Audi is part of VAG - as VW is the largest shareholder in Audi. As for which one is better - it really depends on the specific vehicle. They mostly share technology and platforms - and it is easy to see, the infotainment system in my wife's new Kona is identical (software) to the system in the Soul. If you look at the details, the Kona and the Nero electric share the same motor configuration - but differ in size and battery supplier.

Frankly, for all practical purposes - just choose the better implementation of the same car from either one.

So, if the choice is Hyundai Palisade and Kia Telluride - I would go for the Kia, but if the choice is Kona or Nero - we chose the Hyundai. There is really no inherent advantage to one over the other. This is no Lexus vs Toyota (both Toyota products, but Lexus is the luxury brand usually with better build quality, features).
