So he worked out yesterday, and everyone's excited because blah blah blah Oregon High School Star, most games ever at Duke, etc. And he seems like a really boring pick. But... I kind of wonder if he would be a good pick. A lot of mocks have OKC taking him, on the theory that they need a few glue guys to make their pieces really hum. But so do we! And yes, he only has a 30" vertical (and for reference, Adam Morrison surpassed him by half an inch) but he has a solid vertical reach (higher than Shaun Livingston before the injury) and decent sprint and agility times for someone 6'9". And wouldn't it be nice to have someone who just plays the right way - keeps the ball moving, can hit open jumpers, knows who should be where in defensive rotations? I think James Jones was that guy for us a few years back and he had a really stellar +/- for us.

Thoughts?

(I expected this workout to be all about Vucevic, and perhaps it really was for those in the know. But I notice that he has really small feet and hands for a guy his height and I just find that kind of disappointing...)

I wish we had a bunch of high 2nd round picks for guys like Singler, Smith, Tyler etc.
They all seem intriguing but none worth #21. It seems to me picks 20-50 are all be about the same in terms of talent. Some riskier but with a higher ceiling. Some less riskier but a lower ceiling.

Being as Nate said he would be a three, and we have two very good three's already I would pass. I do like him though.

I'm curious how you explain Dirk Nowitzki. Is he the exception that proves the rule?

When Larry Bird and Dirk Nowitzki sum up white accomplishment for the past 30 years or so, I think they count as exceptions that prove the rule.

no racism. it's all cultural. it's against while people's values to jump high.

I dunno. He'd probably never start and I don't see what he brings off the bench. And what I mean by that is I see bench players as specialists- shooters, rebounders, defensive stoppers... I don't see Singler as any of those. And what position would he play? SF? He'd be #3 or #4 on that depth chart. PF? Undersized and then what? Getting pushed around there.

I just don't see a spot for him where he can really shine- even in a small way.

Dude, you mention race more than anyone else here.

Lighten' up Francis, I'm joking most of the time, but not when it comes to hoops. Stay away from 6'6" to 6'9" WHITE players and you'll be just fine. Please prove me wrong.

Wally Szczerbiak made an All Star Game. He is 6'7"

Rick Barry was 6'7"

Chris Mullin was 6'7"

Kiki Vandeweghe 6'8"

Andrei Kirilenko 6'9"

David Lee 6'9"

Mike Miller 6'8"

Not the best lineup of guys, but they would seem to fit your criteria and I would take any of them in their prime on the current blazers team.

John Stockton doesn't count in your world?

No. I was discussing good players.

(Okay, he does. I forgot him. The main points are: 1. the number of great white players over the past 30 years or so is extremely low and 2. I'm joking in order to bring Shooter in to rage.)

(Mark Price was good, too.)

I'm assuming that because
(a) you didn't mention Steve Nash, but
(b) you treat "Mexican" as a race, then
"Canadian" is also a (non-white) race. We could call them "Icebacks"!

In general, though, basketball is like Rock'n'Roll: the only good non-Black practitioners are also non-American.

Both Gasols? Sabonis? Ginobili, if you put him in platform shoes? BILL WALTON (if we're going back to Rick Barry days)? Kevin McHale? Toni Kukoc? Detlef Schrempf? Rik Smits?

Race is a pretty ill-defined concept. I use it however I deem convenient.

Though, with the recent rioting in Vancouver, I'm starting to wonder if Canadians may be more racially similar to Americans than I once thought. My previous ideas of a riot in Canada was people storming the downtown, ordering coffee and not tipping.

In general, though, basketball is like Rock'n'Roll: the only good non-Black practitioners are also non-American.

If you don't think The Beach Boys (before Mike Love destroyed them) and the Byrds were any good, I don't know what to make of you. Clearly you're a different race.

Jangly guitar wimp-rock for failed choirboys.

The Stooges were okay. But white people from Detroit count as black. (Even if they're called White.)

I forgot you're so macho. You only go for cock rockers like Belle & Sebastian.

The Stooges, New York Dolls and the Ramones were the first wave of punk. Don't let your British schoolbooks fool you into believing the Damned and the Sex Pistols started it.

Also, how can you not like the Velvet Underground?

Brother, I could have made that same list without looking, you know what I mean!

yep, there's bad both black and white players. I'd say that there are many more good black players than white, however.
